Activision Axes 2011 Guitar Hero, Disbands Business Unit

by Mike Bendel on February 9, 2011 @ 2:07 pm

Activision has scrapped plans for a 2011 Guitar Hero title, according to outlook statements in its just-released financial results for calendar year 2010. This comes amid the company’s decision to disband Activision Publishing’s entire Guitar Hero business unit. Additionally, development on True Crime: Hong Kong has ceased.

“These decisions are based on the desire to focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world’s best interactive entertainment experiences,” Activision noted in a statement.

By bowing out of the music genre, Activision plans to allocate more resources towards its key brands, like Call of Duty, alongside properties from Blizzard and Bungie.

thats probably for the best. i think the whole guitar gaming genre has become somewhat stale in the last couple of years. it was good while it lasted though.... i remember spending hours and hours playing guitar hero 1 & 2 in our dorm rooms at college. good times, good times....

It's been sliding down hill since Neversoft took up development.

Rock Band was always superior, but lacked that brand name recognition. It's a shame, but the genre has been over-milked and it needs to die or seriously slow off.

Neversoft seem to have a lot of experience with milking videogames with yearly updates...

It works for some genres like football/soccer games but not the likes of these.

Agreed. This whole thing was nice and all when it was new. BUt after it started becoming a 6-month-new-game thing it became utterly pointless and even ridiculous.
