Is this the PSP2?

by Justin B. on January 24, 2011 @ 9:33 pm

Kotaku has gotten their hands on what they’re calling the “first official shot of the PSP2″ tonight. It looks mightly compelling with dual analogs, a touchscreen, bluetooth, and dual memory card support. Really can’t tell much else from the image but it jives with all the reports that we’ve heard so far on the yet unannounced PSP successor.

Check out the original image (non-watermarked), which seems to be from a document of some sort after the break.

x3sphere says:

I like it, the shell itself looks similar to earlier photos of the PS Phone.

FrozenIpaq says:

I could go with this design, looks better than the previously leaked devkit photo at least.

The cut-off text at the bottom of the document seems to read 2011 Sony Computer Entertainment..... but I can't read the rest of it.

Hellcat says:

Stylus? VERY unlikely.

MS Duo? WTF?!?! These are from the '90s! Why should PSP2 go back 2 generations of storage media?

SD card? ON A SONY DEVICE???? No comment....

Go figure....

// EDIT

The D-Pad and /\, O, [], X buttons are clearly photoshopped into it from a white PSPgo.

FrozenIpaq says:

Styli aren't that bad but I too question it's placement (really don't think they would use a stylus that large). Resistive screens are still very responsive though and accurate.

As far as MS Duo - Yep, I'll agree with you there.

As far as dual memory card support, I wouldn't throw it out the window. Sony has supported dual cards (including SD and MS Pro Duo) in their camera line (my camera has SD card support surprisingly)

Trigun says:

That looks ugly as fuck.

seriously. :<

slicer4ever says:

doesn't sony generally make analog sticks that point out, not inwards?

i call Photoshopped=-)(and if i'm wrong, i won't mind)

x3sphere says:

Outward-facing analog sticks wouldn't work well on a handheld, especially not one with a sliding screen.

slicer4ever says:

depends on the height of the analog stick, and it didn't stop them with the GO, although the GO's version was more flat then it was convex

anywho, we'll find out when sony does an official announcment, i wouldn't mind if this was the legitimate PSP2, but i feel their are some things that point to it being fake

TheRaiderNation says:

My thoughts exactly

Josey Wales says:

Exactly, which makes me confused on what the hell exactly is going on.

El Xando says:

I agree with Hellcat, looks rather photoshopped...

And if it isn't, it's kind of ugly :P

Josey Wales says:

Yea idk man, to me that just looks like more PSP phone nonsense. I mean, it basically looks like cell phone screen on top of a dualshock controller.

slicer4ever says:

slide out controller instead of slide out keyboard=-)

KezraPlanes says:

If this is it I can't say I dislike it tbh. Still, I'll wait and see if it is real

Dan says:

Does look pretty shopped. I am dissappoint.

Bizarre says:

Why are they still using sd cards? Their terribly slow.

El Xando says:

I'm surprised Sony would use SD cards.

Dan says:

Two days boys, all will be revealed.

Juliet says:

I assume, depending on the stylus usage, it will have a resistive touchscreen instead of a capacitive one. This makes input, esp. multi-touch gestures harder to make. Although capacitive touchscreens can be used with a special conductor styli, this is not common. I hope this is the case.

Spiros says:

Though I don't think this is really, I actually really like the design, looks way better than the shots of the dev model that came out awhile back.

Bran says:

This is totally a shop, sometimes I hate Kotaku.

FrozenIpaq says:

They're not actually the ones who got the original image. Some Japanese (or Chinese) site got the picture first

Bran says:

They still report on it like it's news. It's from fucking 2chan.

BlackSheep says:

A couple of more hours!!!!

FrozenIpaq says:

Roughly 4 hours we should get an official announcement. Looks like we'll have to keep an eye on live blogs of the secret event for details

x3sphere says:

Less than an hour left to go! Kotaku is doing a live blog:

xploren says:

Looks pretty good to me so far. All that's left is how good games look and run and the pricing.
