Metro 2034 Poised for E3 Reveal, THQ Promises ‘More Polish’

With a 2012 release date on the cards, THQ is taking its sweet time with Metro 2034, the sequel to last year’s post-apocalyptic hit Metro 2033. In a recent interview with Joystiq, company VP of Core Games Danny Bilson says the follow-up is undergoing heavy polish and will be “properly nurtured” in the marketing department this time around.

Expect everything you loved about Metro to return — from its gripping atmosphere to jaw-dropping visuals — only in refined form.

“Did the game need polish in certain areas? Yes.” he admitted. “So when I say it wasn’t fully supported, it was product development and marketing that didn’t support it the way it should’ve been.” Bilson described Metro 2033 as “an orphan stepchild,” saying that “a great marketer picked it up with four months to go and did what he could with four months to go, but it wasn’t properly nurtured by marketing.”

The absence of polish, Bilson assured, won’t be an issue for Metro 2034, the in-development sequel. “The new one doesn’t have any of those issues,” Bilson said. “I green-lit the sequel before [the first] one shipped, because I know what [4A Games is] capable of — I knew how cool it was.”

Further, Bilson noted that Metro 2034 will be backed by a “first-class marketing campaign” come E3. Fantastic news for fans, really. It’s clear the project is a high priority within THQ. We’re certainly looking forward to immersing ourselves in Metro’s dark and gritty setting yet again.

I still haven't played the first one, I heard nothing but good things from it.

MenaceInc says:

I bought it in the Thanksgiving Steam sale and definitely one of my GOTY for 2010. Unfortunately it's priced at $39.99 on steam (although it's only £19.99 in the UK store).

x3sphere says:

Agreed, one of the best games I played last year. Can't wait for the sequel. BTW it's a Steamworks title so if you find it cheap at retail the serial can be activated on Steam.

KezraPlanes says:

hm, with the re-estruturation of THQ, I believe I'll be taking their titles more seriously now... I should get Metro 2033

Zero says:

Still have to finish this when I find the time, along with Shadow of Chernobyl.

But from what I've seen so far is really top notch, kinda thinking about picking up the novel.

bnaughty18 says:

i want a game like this, future but wasteland, underground, is this game like sandbox?, it will be awesome,.. :)

MenaceInc says:

Metro 2033 was quite linear, definitely wasn't a sandbox game. The STALKER series would be more open but it's aboveground.

Andy says:

I played this briefly on the 360 and really didn't enjoy it, might give it another chance on the PC though.

Norway says:

I played Metro 2033 on PC, and I just loved it!

So far, I have played through the game twice, and when I have the time - I will play it a third time. I love the fallout and stalker universe, and this game gives you the same great post-apocalyptic feeling. Suits my preferences perfectly! Although the game is quite linear, it more than makes up for it with atmosphere, a great storyline and sweet action-sequences. The graphical engine is fantastic and the level of detail although the game was just a piece of art.
