The Gaming Headsets of CES 2011

The annual Consumer Electronics Show just finished over the weekend and several companies were showing off their new gaming-oriented headsets. It seems that many of the companies that revealed these products are trying to go with a platform agnostic approach with all three supporting multiple platforms.

Razer’s Chimaera will officially support the Xbox 360 but will be compatible (without voice) with the PC and PS3. The Tactic 3D Omega from Creative will support all major platforms. Finally Turtle Beach’s PX5 system is designed specifically for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Be sure to check out all the new headsets after the break. It looks like Astro (maker of the A30/A40’s) finally have some worthy competition.

Razer Chimaera (Xbox 360 / PS3 / PC)

The Chimaera was originally announced last year at CES but it isn’t until this year that the headset will be available to consumers. The Chimaera is a wireless headset to be used “exclusively” with the Xbox 360 platform. You’ll also get a base station which acts as the wireless (2.4ghz) transmitter and receiver which accepts digital and analog audio inputs. The volume controls for game and voice audio will be adjustable on the headset itself.

More precise details, such as power supply source, battery life and range are currently left to be guessed. It would be a safe assumption though that the base station would be powered by AC (not USB) and battery life would be around 7 hours.

The headset, which will support 5.1 surround sound, will retail for $199.99 with a $129.99 version offering only 2.1 support. The wireless headset is also charged through the base station in a way that makes it impossible to use the headset and charge it at the same time. To enable voice-chat on the Xbox 360 a cable connects from the controller to the headset, allowing you to move away from the system with both controller and headset.

Creative Sound Blaster Tactic 3D Omega

Creative also announced last their latest headset, the Sound Blaster Tactic 3D Omega. Now try to say that one three times fast… This new headset is also fully wireless with promises of connecting to a wide range of devices, including home consoles.

The Tactic 3D Omega will have a smaller “base station” than the Razer Chimaera, about the size of a hockey puck and will use 2.4ghz wireless technology. The headset features a removable microphone, mic mute button and configurable ear cup lighting. You can expect to use them for 7-8 hours on a single charge and will be able to charge them while using them.

We’ll have more details on this headset when they come out.

Turtle Beach PX5

Turtle Beach has been in the console headset business since the beginning and they’ve announced their newest headset, the wireless PX5 for use with the Xbox 360 and PS3.

The PX5 is the most expensive of the bunch, coming in at $249.99 and supports the Xbox 360 via RF wireless and PS3 via Bluetooth. With that price however you get the ability to create 18 audio presets (configurable via USB/PC), voice morphing capabilities and the ability to connect the headset with bluetooth-enabled smartphones. The base station also acts as a headset holder which is always a plus in my book.
