Dragon Age 2 DLC ‘The Exiled Prince’ Announced, Free With Signature Edition

by Mike Bendel on January 7, 2011 @ 5:36 pm

While Dragon Age 2 isn’t scheduled to hit shelves until March 2011, that isn’t stopping developer BioWare from enticing folks with downloadable content ahead of time.

As part of a promotional pre-order campaign, those who reserve the title before January 11 will receive a free upgrade to the ‘Signature Edition’ of Dragon Age 2, which includes the ‘The Exiled Prince’ DLC pack.

Those that pass on the deal and opt for the standard edition will have to pony up 560 MS Points ($7). For a synopsis of the aforementioned DLC, hit the break.

“The Exiled Prince” introduces the noble archer Sebastian Vael, with players joining him in the middle of his quest to avenge the brutal murder of his family. Sworn to the priesthood as a boy, Sebastian is forced to re-enter the viper’s nest of princely politics when his family is brutally murdered, leaving him as the sole surviving heir. Banding together with Sebastian and his unshakable loyalty and excellent aim, players will choose to either avenge Sebastian’s murdered family to reclaim his title or direct his holy vengeance on their enemies in Kirkwall. In addition to this action-packed storyline, players will also be able to enlist Sebastian as a follower throughout a majority of Dragon Age II.

I dont like this. I think this is one of the reasons why the industry is heading to a place that I dont like.

Willingly saying that DLC will be available is to blatently say "Heres an extra part of the game that is finished but you have to pay extra"

I mean I understand the evolution of how gaming has changed but this is a bit too far, I feel DLC should be conceived post-release, not before.

FrozenIpaq says:

That's exactly my feeling with these situations. I personally hate DLC content (unless it's new maps for a FPS game) and haven't purchased any DLC aside from maps.

Josey Wales says:

The only DLC ive ever bought was every DLC for Fallout 3, and now looking back as games are getting GOTY editions and copies with all the expansions - all you have to do is wait it out and it will be free.

Its such a bunch of assrape.

Craig Fairfax says:

I never got why game companies press so hard to get you to pre-order.

MenaceInc says:

Guaranteed money at what is most likely the highest price.

Broodstar says:

I don't really see why this is that big of a deal. They're using game content to entice pre-orders rather than anything else. If you pre-order you get something you otherwise would have to pay for, seems pretty normal to me.

Josey Wales says:

This is a new tactic in the industry - this hasent been going on forever.

Broodstar says:

Maybe not this scenario exactly, but pre-order rewards are pretty much accepted as standard now. I'm not sure how Bioware's choice to use game content as that reward changes much.

Josey Wales says:

The pre-order bonuses have been going on for a few years now, but thats not to say that everyone agrees with them or believes they should be accepted as well as think they are proper.

Broodstar says:

Honestly I can't understand where the problem is with pre-order bonuses. Bioware wants the guaranteed sales so they incentivise the pre-orders, nothing shady, and unless Bioware actually releases an awful product no one gets ripped off.

Josey Wales says:

Youre mistaken, my beef isnt really with pre-order bonuses, its with DLC that is known to be DLC before the release of the game. I find that more of the problem.

I was just discussing the pre-order bonuses and how they were still sort of a new theme to the industry.

Broodstar says:

Fair enough, and yeah there is clearly a problem if content is withheld from the first release to sell as DLC, wringing every last penny out of customers is never cool. If the DLC doesn't actually exist pre-release i'm kind of fine with it.

Josey Wales says:

Same, thats the general consensus.
