Call of Duty: Black Ops Generates Over $1 Billion Worldwide

Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops continues to set records across all forms of entertainment, with Activision announcing today that the title has grossed a cool $1 billion worldwide. This milestone comes a mere month after the explosive November debut.

More eye-popping statistics follow after the break.

“To date, more than 600 million hours have been logged playing Call of Duty: Black Ops since the game launched on November 9, 2010. According to Microsoft, the average player logs on more than once a day and plays for more than one hour each time. Over half of that time is spent playing online with and against friends, illustrating the unique social characteristics of the game.”

“In its first five days alone, the game sold more than $650 million worldwide, outpacing theatrical box office, book and video game sales records for five-day worldwide sell through in dollars, according to internal Activision estimates and boxofficemojo.com. The game exceeded Activision’s previous five-day worldwide record of $550 million set by last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare® 2.”

First Strike, the first batch of downloadable content for Black Ops, drops first on Xbox Live come February 1.

Not surprised at that since it's consistently on Steam's top seller's list and also stays at the list of most played games on steam. If it hadn't been for the issues at launch that harmed the image of the game in most gamer's minds then I think that it really would have done better on the PC though.

Robby says:

Did the PC get the patches the same time as console gamers got there? All launch issues were fixed relativity fast in comparison to past CoD's.

MenaceInc says:

For some people yes but there was a massive patch released only a week or two ago to try to optimize stuff. Of course with PC gamers being whiney bitches, nothing worked and treyarch were assholes who had stolen money from the hardworking PC gamer. Personally, I haven't had any major issues since Day 1. My fps has been increased since but it was around 60fps anyways before.

FrozenIpaq says:

There have been more frequent PC updates compared to the console versions if I recall correctly

Zero says:

PC gamers have been getting patches the same time if not earlier than their console conterparts. (For example, the Sniper/Knife patch was given to PC players before the PS3) Treyarch have already dealt with the stuttering issues, namely with too frequent stat updates, sound caching and also shader loading.

Black Ops has already been patched more in it's current lifespan than MW2 ever was, so if that's not Treyarch saying "we are supporting the PC version", I don't know what will.

So I would say it's earnt it's sales well. It's funny how MW2 was propped up by COD4's prestige yet Black Ops got tainted by MW2's flaws.

FrozenIpaq says:

JD_2020 just tweeted that they are working on Mod Tools for the PC version of the game, details to come "in the future" though

MenaceInc says:

Like I said, I haven't had any major issues and it runs well for me. The minority who do have issues (whether they're related to Treyarch's coding skills or problems with their own computer) are really fucking vocal about it and would have you believe that everyone and their grandmother had the same issues as them. Anyone who hasn't had problems must be a lying apologetic fanboy.

It's shit like that which makes it godawful to be a PC gamer atm.

El Xando says:

Updates are coming out for PC so frequently (and earlier than console) because they don't have to go through Microsoft/Sony. I read a thread on callofduty.com I believe where they explained the whole update process, and said updates typically can get out for PC once they've actually been developed rather than being approved (which seems stupid, what are they going to put in that Microsoft/Sony wouldn't approve?)

slicer4ever says:

people will bitch if they have problems, and make sure they are well heard

microsoft/sony probably just want to make sure the updates don't start crashing systems, also, microsoft generally seems to enforce the idea of tiny updates, rather than large ones, so i'm sure when developers like treyarch put out an update, they need to ensure that it's as small as possible in terms of filesize

MenaceInc says:

It's fine getting your voice heard but falling short of outright accusing people of lying when they say they can't replicate the issue is stupid and annoys the hell out of me.

I've got it out of my system. Enough ranting about people ranting...it gets no one anywhere.
