Steam Holiday Sale Is A Go

by Mike Bendel on December 20, 2010 @ 12:45 pm

Valve has gone full blast with its annual Steam Holiday Sale, offering a cornucopia of games at deep, wallet-tempting discounts. In addition to the usual assortment of time-limited daily deals, this time there’s a twist with more ways to save.

Each day will bring a special holiday bonus, offering users discounts on top of discounts based on your purchase history. Today only, those that own Half-Life 2 will receive an extra 10 percent off on Portal, bumping up the overall savings to 85 percent.

The sale will run through January 2. Head on over to the Steam storefront page to check out today’s specials. And, uh, we’re sorry about your wallet.

They still haven't updated the storefront though. You can't tell what's Daily Deals and what's not =/

Andy says:

When I get paid on Friday I am gonna buy the shit out of these games.

MenaceInc says:

they're updated for me :\

clear cache maybe? Idunno

EDIT: After I posted this, I can't get onto the site now...seems like it's being overwhelmed... :|

x3sphere says:

Defo in for Super Meat Boy :D

MenaceInc says:

Have it for the 360, amazing game. You'll hate the warp zone for The Kid from I Wanna Be The Guy (spoiler for level design? nothing story related)...that's 3 hours of my life I'll never get back... >.<

Pokemanz master says:

Wish I didn't buy super meat boy on the first day.:argh:

The f.e.a.r collection for $10 is perfect.

TeamOverload says:

Super Meat Boy purchased :)

KezraPlanes says:

I gave my girlfriend Portal :P She gave me Mass Effect 1 in return :P

Zero says:

Steam and their typical wallet surgery again.

Although I'm so happy that I waited for SMB. :D

PR0fessor Burnt says:

Super meat boy only 3.75. and i have no car to go get a visa gift card. fml

Zero says:

Hmm, should I buy Dues Ex, I've never played it but heard great things about it.

MenaceInc says:

Yes, it is awesome.

I've found that I've bought a few games already that I kinda wanted and I'm also finding loads of games in my library that I actually do not remember buying...

Doc Clock: The Toasted Sandwich of Time, Eufloria, Iron Grip: Warlord... I don't remember buying any of those 3

Games that I kinda wanted to buy when looking on the store but found I had already owned :S

Gravitron 2, Velvet Assassin, The Witcher...

xploren says:

Looking forward to some great deals. Already grabbed Super Meat Boy, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and FEAR 2 (I've been meaning to play it for awhile now).

FrozenIpaq says:

In desperate need of money in my bank account I am... I don't even have enough to buy any of these games :/

Zero says:

What a bummer, Super Meat Boy crashes on launch.

And Team Meat's reply is "wait untill next update and see if that fixes it" (:troll:)

xploren says:

Working perfectly fine for me. Reinstall? Not that big of a download.

Zero says:

Actually, Steam just rolled out an update fixing it.

The game is incredible. Very few games pull off the ability to be both fun and challenging, this one does.

x3sphere says:

Picked up The Witcher and Lara Croft: GOL today. Still undecided on Burnout. I already own it on PS3, so not sure if I want to double dip.

FrozenIpaq says:

No need to double dip! Although that is actually the only game I've ever double dipped with (only because I had a few friends on the PS3 wanting me to get it as well).

Just deposited some money into my bank account and might just pick up a few games on sale.

MenaceInc says:

I've got Super Meat Boy, Perfect Dark, F.E.A.R., DOOM, Geometry Wars and a few other games that I can't think of right now on multiple platforms. Nowt wrong with buying games multiple times if they're dam good games I think.

Adiuvo says:

I doubled dipped on Burnout too. It's really a different experience on PC, though if you don't have a controller don't bother. It's impossible to play properly with a keyboard.

I'm picking up The Witcher today. $5 is excellent.

x3sphere says:

Wish Steam let you install games to a drive of your choice, rather than just dumping everything on one. Running low on space on this 1TB.

Zero says:

You can probably use symlinks to move specific game directories out of /steamapps/.

But, it'd probably get messy, but it's an option over moving your entire library to another drive.

MenaceInc says:

:P

x3sphere says:

Aah handy, thanks :)

Zero says:

Yep, symlinks.

Also, a useful tool for anyone that picked up / has Deus Ex, there's a Direct3D 10 renderer available to make it more modern looking.

Adiuvo says:

That's incredible! Thanks for the link Zero :)

PR0fessor Burnt says:

So I got supermeatboy. I now need to get a gamepad as it's way to hard to play with a keyboard

MenaceInc says:

Super Meat Boy has this weird stutter for me...it's not fps since my machine rips through the game and there's no dip in fps using FRAPS. The backgorund animations are perfectly fine but Meat Boy kinda spazzes out and when he's moving a big distance (like when he drops a large distance) he jumps...it's a weird glitch but I haven't seen anyone else complaining about it. Even with that glitch, it's an awesome game on the PC or the 360.

Also, here's a 1680x1050 screenshot which I'm using for a wallpaper at the moment xD

Today's deals were a bit of an anti-climax with it being a repeat of this weeks best-sellers. :\

PR0fessor Burnt says:

ya was a little disappointing but at least i got a chance to get super meat boy at a really low price.

also I had a really weird glitch on one of the first levels where I literally flew through the wall. then after that my spacebar became unresponsive for some reason and I couldn't jump D:

x3sphere says:

I picked up Darksiders today, it's a Zelda / GoW hybrid. Keep hearing good things about it.

FrozenIpaq says:

Yeah Abe loved that game, it's still on my to-play list

MenaceInc says:

Might get darksiders but I'm not sure if I'd prefer to play it on the 360 with achievements and using a controller

Josey Wales says:

Darksiders is pretty decent, although very short if you play straight through. Not much replay considering its more heavy on fighting and less on puzzles.

Regardless, a good play if you are into the lore of heaven and hell and GoW/DmC types of dynamics or just LoZ in general

x3sphere says:

Why not use your 360 controller on PC?

Zero says:

Highly recommend you use a gamepad with SMB, much easier to hurl a controller out the window (and cheaper) as opposed to your shiny logitech keyboard.

Zero says:

I'm on the fence with Darksiders ATM, can anyone give their own inputs on what the game's like?

MenaceInc says:

I like to be awkward. In my head, it's always been marked as a 360 game. There's still achievements but they're Steam achievements which are nigh on pointless...wait, all achievements are....fuck it, I'm buying it.

PR0fessor Burnt says:

Its in a way alot like zelda with all the puzzles and the combat is also similar. Its a really good game imo

x3sphere says:

I'd say Rush is a must-buy at $1.69 if you are into puzzlers. Haven't put much time into it yet but seems quite polished. It's developed by the same team behind Toki Tori, which was excellent.

FrozenIpaq says:

Just bought that and recently bought Battlefield Bad Company 2; slower progression / game speed than I'm used too but it's a good MP game that I haven't played much of

Zero says:

I've been meaning to pick up the Vietnam expansion, but I'll wait until the 7th, just in case it goes on sale. It's unlikely, but I'm remaining hopeful.

I'm eyeing the Indie packs. Provided nothing spectacular goes on sale, I'm planning on grabbing the Beat pack and the 2D pack. Mainly for bit.trip and VVVVVV.

x3sphere says:

Pretty awesome deals today. Amnesia is only $6.80 ($4.80 if you have Penumbra from the Humble Indie Bundle). Must buy for any horror fan.

I also picked up The Ball, Dead Space, and Swords and Soldiers HD.

FrozenIpaq says:

I might pick up The Ball...heard good things about it. Definitely recommend anyone who hasn't played Dead Space yet to pick it up if they can; glad I didn't purchase it last week when I was looking to buy it (I ended up pirating it :o ). I need to stop buying games that are so cheap...it all racks up and I need to save money not spend it

x3sphere says:

Yeah, I've mostly been sticking to games at $5 or under. Probably have spent close to $100 already though (there goes like half the money I got for Christmas) :\

Seth says:

Not sure if this has been posted yet but

Plants vs. Zombies GOTY Edition for $4

Amnesia: The Dark Descent for $6.80

Dead Space for $6.80

The Quake Collection for $10.20

x3sphere says:

If you are looking for something new and fresh I'd recommend checking out Ion Assault. It's a daily indie deal right now - $2.50.

Unfortunately there's no Steam demo available but if you have a 360 you can try it out on XBLA.
