Marcan Hacks Kinect, Releases Open Source Driver

A lone hacker, namely Hector “marcan” Martin of Wii liberating and PS3 Linux fame, has risen to Adafruit’s $3000 challenge, releasing a fully open-source Kinect driver for PC.

The driver itself supports depth and RGB images and displays them on an OpenGL window, according to Marcan. Here’s the surprising bit: not only did he pull off this feat sans access to an Xbox 360, it was done in a mere three hours after picking up a Kinect unit at the European launch. For a demonstration, check out the clip above. Impressive work!
