PSP Firmware 3.71 Decrypted, New PSARDumper Released

by Mike Bendel on September 13, 2007 @ 3:21 pm

Mere HOURS after the release of firmware 3.71 for the PSP, hacking team M33 have already manged to fully decrypt the new firmware and have released an update to PSARDumper, which now supports firmware 3.71 decryption.

Spread the word and DIGG THIS!

This is a recode of psardumper for 2.XX & 3.XX kernels.

If you are in a CFW of the fat psp, be sure to put it in GAME3XX or in GAME if you have it
configured for 3.XX kernel.

Support for 3.7X decryption has also been added.

The instructions are same as for original psardumper, except that you don’t need the DATA.PSAR
in the root of memory stick, but instead the EBOOT.PBP; this is to make it more noobs-friendly
and lazy-friendly.

So this is for developers?

Darkchild says:

Well..let's just say that if you want to make a custom theme, you need the RCO's decripted :)

Anyways good job M33 (And another thing, this can help the making of [dare I say it?] 3.71 m33)

x3sphere says:

Yes. Also it means that a 3.71 CFW is possible now :)

Hanzo_f19 says:

probably we will need this for the 3.71 popsloader to(sony said that they were going update it, remember?)

Hanzo_f19 says:

i bet that we will only need some hours for the 3.71 m33 release

gkid007 says:

Is there a chance for a 3.71 downgrader?

x3sphere says:

Already is one... check out Pandora's Battery :)

http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3238

gkid007 says:

Don't i need to have on 1.5. Right now it's on 3.71, how do i downgrade it?

x3sphere says:

Someone with firmware 1.5 or custom firmware needs to convert the battery for you, and install the memory stick files.

If you don't anyone that can do this, then there's people over at Noobz who will do it for you.

gkid007 says:

I dont understand

gkid007 says:

Also will there be another way of downgrading besides the pandora?

(Please make it be yes)

Acerthief says:

i'm sorry there isn't anyway left. After the pandora battery comes out most people stops developing downgraders.

**please do not double post. Thanks:)

gkid007 says:

NOOOOOOOOOOO I'm doomed

Acerthief says:

no you're not.

go to noobz site and there's a place where people can convert it for you for free or little fee.

x3sphere says:

Nothing is impossible, but I wouldn't get your hopes up for another traditional downgrader...

gkid007 says:

"Sigh"

kingfoot says:

im in the same boat as gkid007. i have no way of someone near me that can make the battery, i cant ship it off (as my parents will be suspcious, and they are against things that are illegal, and if my dad has the idea that its illegal in his head, he wont change his mind.)

too bad im not knowledgeable enough to make my own downgrader.

i wish D_A would come back. I hate the pandora battery.

GUIDE UPDATED, LOOK FOR BOLD UPDATE TAGS FOR NEW INFO

I actually registered for these forums in an attempt to possibly save you.

If you've got about $30, you can still set yourself up for homebrew.

Buy this: http://us.codejunkies.com/shop/product.asp?c=US&cr=USD&cs=$&r=0&l=1&ProdID=986

Its basically a premade Pandora's Battery by Datel (if your parents are suspicious, just write it off as a spare battery and claim you want an extra for on the road). You still have to make the Magic Memory Stick component to really give yourself the Pandora's Battery functionality (this battery just snaps your PSP into Service Mode, which allows you to go behind the Firmware to do work).

UPDATE: Datel released a TOOL battery for slim PSPs. Buy it here: http://us.codejunkies.com/shop/product.asp?c=US&cr=USD&cs=$&r=0&l=1&ProdID=986

Normally, you'd have to find someone who already has a custom Firmware PSP to make the Magic Memory Stick for you but use this program and it will take care of the files for you (just hook your PSP up to the computer; see below for a guide on how this thing works): http://rapidshare.com/files/51253858/Pandora_s_Box.rar.html

Go here to download 3.60 M33 for usage on the Slim PSP (just change the readme.en file within to readme.txt and open it with Notepad for instructions on how to install 3.60 M33 once you have the battery and Magic Memory Stick): http://dl.qj.net/M33-PSP-Slim-Custom-Firmware-3.60-PSP/pg/12/fid/14521/catid/114

UPDATE: 3.71 M33 is out now (for both slim and older PSPs) but you will need to have 3.52 M33 (old PSPs) or 3.60 M33 (slim PSPs) installed first to make this work. Download it here (you will also need to find the 3.71 official Sony Firmware to perform this update): http://dl.qj.net/Team-M33-PSP-CFW-3.71-GP2X-Development/pg/12/fid/14635/catid/251

Hopefully this clears the air a little. This is the alternative method for people who don't have access to people who can make a Pandora's Battery for them.

UPDATE: Finally I tracked down the directions to creating a Magic Memory Stick WITHOUT A CUSTOM FIRMWARE PSP (yes, it can be done). Please note these directions are merely for creating the Memory Stick. Without a custom Firmware PSP on hand, you will still need to purchase the Datel TOOL battery (see above for purchase links). Special thanks go to ff8ff8 over on GameFAQs for writing this up (I'm a member of their forums and I found this guide over there):

If you're interested in reading his entire guide; visit this topic: http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=918340&topic=38235129

I apologize if this is a little confusingly written. If someone wants me to make a dedicated thread; please post so.

kingfoot says:

Hmm, thanks so much. I actually can get a buddy of mine to order this for me. and those links you provided are awesome. thanks so much!

SonicTH says:

Surprised so few people have heard of the TOOL battery. Team n00bz released a statement about it (said they didn't like Datel was talking people into buying these but not actually saying the battery alone won't do anything).

Personally; I think its a good idea for Datel to sell these so long as they don't get in trouble with Sony (which is totally possible). Not everyone can create a Pandora's Battery and at least they're trying to help.

shadowthor says:

This basically doesn't help. It only helps on the aspect that the battery is created. You still need to convert the memory stick into the magic memory stick in order to use the service battery (pandora battery).

SonicTH says:

The Magic Memory Stick does not need to be created using a custom Firmware PSP. You can create the Magic Memory Stick by just adding files directly to the Memory Stick from your computer. I provided a program that will let you do that.

MenaceInc says:

wow...that is the most effort i've seen someone make on a forum to help someone else....kudos to you sir, you really are an inspiration. :)

Chito1978 says:

I Am New In The Psp World, I Have A Psp With The 3.71 Firmware.. Can You Guys Help Me To Install The Custom Firmware For This Version??

Regards

x3sphere says:

Have you looked at the couple posts above you? To do that, you'll need a Pandora's Battery.

donsammy says:

is it for lite or old one

SonicTH says:

Well, my method was for people who wanted to modify their slim PSPs to run custom Firmware. Older model PSPs require a different method to mess with them (mostly involving downgrading to 1.50 before installing whatever CFW is out for those; my old PSP runs 3.52 M33-4).

Pandora's Battery can be used as a universal downgrading system that lets you downgrade any PSP regardless of what Firmware version its running. Either you make the Pandora's Battery and Magic Memory Stick using a custom Firmware PSP or you buy a Datel TOOL battery and create a Magic Memory Stick by adding files directly to the stick instead of doing it from inside the PSP (using a Memory Stick reader of some sort; or even just hooking the PSP to the computer via USB).

smokeybeef says:

SonicTH:

I do not think your method will work, have you tried it?

Pandora's Box still requires you to run software on the actual psp afterwards to fully create the memory stick.

which requires a homebrew enabled psp.

SonicTH says:

I've been assured it can be done without a stick but if you insist I can do a little more research to put your mind at ease.

smokeybeef says:

I don't mean to disagree with you but I was thinking of buying the datel battery tool thing and making my own magic stick. (stuck in the 'owning slim but no phat' situation)

But when I tried and from what I've read you need to run a couple of installers on a psp (1.5) to complete the memory stick

steevyhead says:

sonic th

PLEASE tell me how to make the battery without the custom firmware. I have the pandora files, mem stick and spare battery ready to go.

how do i set up the majik mem stick without custom firmware PLEASE

SonicTH says:

You can't create a JigKick Battery without a custom Firmware PSP. It is impossible (you will either need to buy a Datel TOOL battery or find someone with a custom Firmware PSP to make one for you).

To create the Magic Memory Stick; use this GUI:

http://rs91.rapidshare.com/files/51253858/Pandora_s_Box.rar

It will install the files to your MS Duo for you from your computer.

Zone says:

Hi SonicTH

I'm planning to buy a PSP Slim. I keep reading everywhere that it's impossible to downgrade from firmware 3.71 to 1.50.

Would the method you posted work? Would it make it possible to downgrade a PSP slim to 1.50 and then install the latest custom firmware?

Acerthief says:

Downgrading to 1.5 is only for phat (older) PSP.

Slim doesn't use this method. If you have 3.60, then you can flash to 3.60M33 (you need a pandora battery, check it out HERE).

Then you can upgrade to 3.71M33.

The problem is if you don't have anyone with 1.5 or custom firmware on a phat PSP, then you'll need to buy either a Datel tool, or look for someone that would be delighted to help you with a small fee in noobz.eu.

@SonicTH: Do i need to help you upload the pandora box GUI onto the exophase server, so there won't be an expire problem?

Zone says:

Thanks Acerthief.

But I'm a bit confused. The tutorial for installing the 3.60M33 firmware on a slim PSP includes steps that "must be executed on a homebrew-capable regular PSP with a regular battery inserted. The inserted memory stick must contain the Pandora files, as noted in the prerequisites section above ."

I guess that this means that an old fat PSP is required, or am I missing something? Can you install 3.60M33 without having a fat PSP handy?

Thanks for your assistance.

SonicTH says:

That would be nice.

Allow me to look into this matter. As I created my Pandora's Battery and Magic Memory Stick for 3.60 M33 with a regular CFW PSP; I never attempted the method I'm posting here (I'm just trying to help those with what I can). I've been curious about this myself.

UPDATE: I've got instructions on how to create a 3.60 M33 Magic Memory Stick without a custom Firmware PSP but I can't post them yet because it requires a file I don't have in my possession. Once I figure out where to get it from; I'll post said instructions here.

reandaya says:

right now im on 3.71 m33 cfw...im just wonderin' do i really need this PSP Firmware 3.71 Decrypted, New PSARDumper and does really do? just enable me to install custom theme?...please advice

Cheezeball99 says:

Basically what USERS use PSARDumper for is to decrypt the new firmwares to use them for Popstation (the PSX emulator), or more specifically, Popsloader, so you can load different versions of Popstation in case one version works better for a game than another.

reandaya says:

thanks cheeze appreciate it

pspuser says:

Hi, I live outside the United States and my Dad is going to order me a psp slim from the U.S.A. I am getting it because my old psp (fat) does not work any more? It will not turn on??? (just a black screen no light, did not do anything to make it get bricked and I got a new battery but nothing happens).

When I get my new psp I would like to upgrade it to the M33 custom firmware, because it is really hard to buy games here, so it would be nice to be able to download hombrew. My question is this, does the sistem (mentioned above) work. I cannot use my old psp for the process because it does not work and I do not know anybody that has a psp here that can run hombrew. Has anybody tried it? I just don't want my psp to get bricked.

Acerthief says:

your kind of posting in the wrong thread. but anyways.

(this thread is a program for developers or people who need to dycrypt things)

You're old PSP won't work because it's "bricked". But you can recover it now.

depends if your psp is Slim or Phat, and it works perfectly. (my phat is 3.71M33 and i flashed 3 of my friends slim)

But you'll need a Pandora Battery. Check it out HERE.

Hopefully the batteries from your old PSP will work, you'll just need to find some one to convert the battery and memory stick for you.

You can find people with custom firmware around you, or you can ask for help by people in noobz.eu.

If you have any other problems, please post in the "PSP Help Center".

SonicTH says:

Of course you could look earlier in this thread and see my post on the TOOL battery. It could end up costing the same no matter what you do to hack your system.

SonicTH says:

Hey guys. I finally, FINALLY got my hands on the files necessary to put 3.60 M33 files onto a slim PSP without needing a custom Firmware PSP (the download was being EXTREMELY stubborn and I finally got it working for the first time today). If anyone wants the files; just give me a place to upload them to and I'll do it.

With this; I think I can create a comprehensive guide on how to make a PSP (slim or otherwise) homebrew-enabled without needing any custom Firmware PSP. Would anyone like me to write one up?

MenaceInc says:

sounds good to me :)

SonicTH says:

Fair enough. Could you suggest some server space where my files won't get deleted? I'll try to upload everything that's required so you won't need to go searching for it.

MenaceInc says:

as far as i know,x3 has like 118gig on the exophase server spare so you could ask him about it :)

Acerthief says:

there's a "upload link" under the place where you enter text.

so just buff up everything there and volia!

Roe says:

Just wondering whether these files would be the copyrighted Sony files?

SonicTH says:

Some of them are.

MenaceInc says:

then you can't upload them for copyright reasons.you can however give links to them if they're avalible somewhere else.....i think.

Acerthief says:

what copyrights files are you going to upload particularly?

you can send them to me first and I'll take a look :D

SonicTH says:

The Pandora's Box GUI I'm not sure what's in there. I've just been told it uses copyrighted Sony files.

The 3.60 M33 package definitely does. Not entirely sure what it encompasses; I just know it does.

Acerthief says:

I See.

Well maybe you can only give it up then. :(

SonicTH says:

But isn't this an ends-justify-the-means matter?

Acerthief says:

er... sorry for my bad english.

"ends-justify-the-means"?

Cheezeball99 says:

But legality-trumps-illegality, anytime. IF, in fact, anything of this is illegal. I suppose nobody's really sure.

SonicTH says:

But now there will be some people who won't be able to downgrade their PSPs...

x3sphere says:

well if the files are illegal, which I'll assume they are, since some of the files that are created when making the magic memory stick should not be distributed, then we can't post up a guide for this.

Developers go through a lot of trouble to make this stuff legal. For example with OE / M33, none of the original Sony files are modified even when the firmware is installed. The custom firmware just modifies values in RAM.

Private messages aren't monitored so needless to say if you want to help someone through PM that's fine. I won't know about it.

zdagher says:

SonicTH,

Just to make sure I understand...you've found a way to downgrade a fat PSP running 3.71 WITHOUT requiring the use of a custom (or 1.0/1.5) firmware PSP to make a Pandora battery? if this is the case, please, PLEASE share this information.

Acerthief says:

Better through PM with him ;)

parkman5588 says:

I just upgraded for 2.8 to 3.71 on the official site I don't have any of the extras that everyone seems to have like ms33, 0r the adon 1.50. How can I upgrade of downgrade to one of these without the use of Pandora.

I just read about the 3.71 decrypted and I don't understand about kernals and how to tell how many kernals my system is using

x3sphere says:

You need to use Pandora to downgrade 3.71. There's no other way.

zdagher says:

How do i PM?

Sorry for the stupid question. I AM computer literate. Promise.

x3sphere says:

Go to User CP -> Send new message

I just upgraded to 3.0 on the official site am able to play a certain type of games on my psp.

icedman204 says:

If ISO's no you need CFW, but i think PSX Eboots work on both CFW and sony's Offical FW.

parkman5588 says:

Thanks

parkman5588 says:

Where is a good place to find eboot specific files

Acerthief says:

specific files?

do you mean the update EBOOTs or just any homebrew?

parkman5588 says:

No just EBOOTS

x3sphere says:

Need to be more specific, nearly every single homebrew available for PSP is an EBOOT.

This for example is an EBOOT: http://exophase.com/psp/psp-gnu-chess-v101-2385.htm

badChild says:

i tried this PSAR Dumper thing, it looks like somethings about to happen, then comes an error message: "the game could not be started. (80020148)" any help for this problem?. How exactly does the PSAR Dumper work?

Acerthief says:

What firmware do you have? ( and is it official or custom firmware?)

Sony Official Firmwares cannot run this.

PSAR Dumper is to dump the files from update EBOOTs, mostly files that goes into your main flash memory "flash0". This is for most Devs to use it,

or i'd use it when i have a missing file i need. :D

minxamo says:

i've downloaded it, what parts do i put on my psp and where?? ( i am a total noob =S)

and btw do i need to get custom firmware and stuff or that pandora's battery thing??

minxamo says:

plz answer question =)

x3sphere says:

Are you sure you need to be running this? From the sound of it you don't really understand what this does. PSARDumper is only used to decrypt firmware files.

But to answer your question, yes you need to be running custom firmware. To run the application, copy over the "newpsardumper" folder to X:/PSP/GAME150 and launch it from the Game menu.

nevster says:

hiya, just updated to 3.71 m33-3 and was wondering if i have to use this to make the new popsloader work and to dycrypt the 3.72 ofw to get remote play to work... thanks

nevster says:

Also where does the src folder go please?

nevster says:

hiya sorry to keep bugging but im trying to get remote play to work with my ps3 and my psp, i have the needed files from the 3.72 ofw, and i did the flash0 to look at the folders to put them in and saw i dont have a module folder, i have a podule folder though lol thought i'd ask before i start sticking files there, made that mistake last time lol

x3sphere says:

You definitely have a module folder... make sure you have "show hidden files and folders" enabled in Windows, as I believe its a hidden folder.

ashmeet says:

wenever i try mt psar dumper it says 'The game could not be started.' (80020148)

wats up???

x3sphere says:

What firmware do you have installed? If it is an official firmware such as 3.71 then you cannot run this. PSARDumper, like any homebrew application, can only be run on custom firmware.

Concept17 says:

ok ive been reading forums and what not but , IS there any possible way to downgrade 3.71 to 1.50? I do not know how to pandora battery shit, and i dont want to buy a new battery, because the one i have works. SO is there anyway?

Acerthief says:

nope, there's no other way than Pandora.

and please, watch your language.

Concept17 says:

yea sorry bout that heh. So i need another Battery to do this? And what kind of Memory stick do i need, i have a 1gb stick

Acerthief says:

no you don't need an extra battery, because after you can convert the battery back to it's normal state. 1GB is fine. but you'll need a homebrew-compatible PSP to help you convert the files.

You can check out the noobz.eu forums and see if there's people willing to help. (there's a thread where people post saying that they would help. :D)

Concept17 says:

well i think ill just look up directions, quick question, can you give me a link to a homebrew that i need?

Concept17 says:

also i heard that you cant convert the PB back to normal

Acerthief says:

homebrew that you need?

sorry man don't get you quite there.

all the stuff needed will be in the archive of the guides. :D

yup i said that already in the previous posts.:)

Concept17 says:

well how do i enable homebrew on my psp?

x3sphere says:

You need to install custom firmware, which can only be accomplished on 3.71 by using a Pandora battery and magic memory stick.

Someone with a homebrew-enabled PSP (meaning one that has custom firmware installed) will have to convert the battery and install the memory stick files for you. It's the only way.

Concept17 says:

.....this is the most complicated thing ive ever had to mod. I have no friends that have homebrew, or a psp for that matter. dont really got any money to ship it off either. Make a downgrader!!

Concept17 says:

is there a way to downgrade to like 3.52? then downgrade from there to 1.50?

x3sphere says:

Unfortunately no. Like I said, with 3.71 the only way is Pandora. There are simple software downgraders for older firmwares such as 2.71 and 3.03 but not 3.71 due to added security.

Concept17 says:

ah, well poo. I guess i have to find another person with a psp

Concept17 says:

Couldnt i just download the firmware files to my comp and put them onto my pc, then to my mem stick, then downgrade with my pandora battery? i got version 3.71. I just dont understand why i have to have a firmwared psp to help me

x3sphere says:

Indeed you can skip the part of using a custom firmware PSP to generate the firmware files and instead download them straight to your memory stick. However, the files are illegal to distribute so I can't help you there.

Concept17 says:

isnt creating a pandora's battery and modding the psp illegal? i mean its messing with the kernel so

Concept17 says:

could you at least tell me what the files are called? :)

Concept17 says:

Can i revert my Memory stick back to normal or is it really changed at all?

x3sphere says:

Try Googling for "TOTALNewbi easyInstaller for Pandora"

Concept17 says:

ah ok thanks, but is my memory stick crap after i do this?

x3sphere says:

No... you can still use the memory stick normally after installing the files.

Concept17 says:

ok i formated my stick, and now i went to pandora's battery application in psp game directory, but it says when i run it

"The game could not be started. (8002014c)

x3sphere says:

You still need a homebrew PSP to the convert the battery... I was assuming you bought a pre-converted one, since in your original post you implied that you already had the battery.

http://us.codejunkies.com/news_reviews.asp?c=US&cr=USD&cs=&r=0&l=&i=9117&p=18&s=24

TOOL version is what you need.

Concept17 says:

................... what? why cant convert battery myself with files i got !?!?!

Concept17 says:

eh, ill just hardmod my battery. see if that works lol

Arta says:

Hi. i have a 3.52 OFW. im ordering the TOOL battery....and downloaded this to my computer

now wat do i do to downgrade to 1.50?

Arta says:

is that the thing to make my mem stick a magic?

can i use the "TOTALNewbi easyInstaller for Pandora"

and the TOOL battery to make my mem stick a magic memory stick? then will i be able to down grade to 1.50 then up to a Custom Firmware to allow me to play CSO's?also i have a a 2 gig nd a 4 gig if it matters

i have a phat psp lol forgot to say that

frosty5689 says:

Why would you buy the daxtel "tool" battery when you have cfw and you can make a "tool" battery yourself?

Arta says:

i dont have custom firmware i have official.....

x3sphere says:

Yes, using the TOTALNewbi easyInstaller for Pandora works fine.

jessica says:

You cannot (I repeat CANNOT downgrade your PSP with any firmware higher than 3.50 without a Pandora's Battery). The best way to downgrade a PSP Slim & Lite would be to use a Pandora's Battery/JigKick. It will universally downgrade any Sony Firmwares. Yes if you brick your PSP and send it to Sony, they wont be happy, but the consequences of bricking your PSP are now eliminated because of Pandora's Battery. When you brick, use this, and it will start your PSP back up without Sony's help. On the subject of ISO's, yes a Custom Firmware can play them, but downloading games you didn't buy is illegal and there are ALOT of scam sites that will take advantage of you and your money. So BE CAREFUL!!!

You don't downgrade PSP Slim & Lite to install Custom Firmware, it's completely different then the Original (Fat) PSP (and quite complicated).

Custom Firmware means mostly Emulators, Downloading ISO/CSO games, and Homebrew. Use Homebrew, because Sony has refused to give us PSP owners the things we want. We must rely on Homebrew to give us these things... I want to watch YouTube videos directly on my PSP... I bet 90% of the PSP owners out there want to do this, why, in the last 3 years hasn't Sony released a Firmware that supports this? Thanks to PSPTube, we can.
