Valve’s digital distribution service Steam continues to grow at a rapid pace as the company announces that the service has amassed more than 30 million accounts since its 2003 inception.

Valve has shared a few other nuggets of activity and sales data to herald this far-reaching milestone. Notably, user growth increased by 178 percent over the past year while Steam sales rose by 200 percent, realizing a 100 percent year-over-year uptick in transactions.

Additionally, the underlying network infrastructure behind Steam now boasts connectivity rated at 400Gps, “enough bandwidth to ship a digitized version of the Oxford English Dictionary 92.6 times per second,” according to the company.

“Steam is on track to record the biggest year in its six year history,” said Gabe Newell, president of Valve. “The year has marked major development advances to the platform with the introduction of support for Mac titles, the Steam Wallet and in-game item buying support, and more. We believe the growth in accounts, sales, and player numbers is completely tied to this work and we plan to continue to develop the platform to offer more marketing, sales, and design tools for developers and publishers of games and digital entertainment”

It’s impressive. With the bulk of the PC market transitioning over to digital distribution, it’s safe to assume Valve’s dominance will continue to bolster from here on out.
