NPD: Halo Reach Dominates September, Shifts 3.3 Million Units

Sales tracking firm NPD has sent over its monthly industry sales report, heralding Halo Reach as a dominating force in the software channel for the month of September. The title shifted 3.3 million units in just under three weeks following its September 14 debut, a figure comparable to first month sales of Halo 2 and Halo 3.
The combined total of sales video game segment generated $1.18 billion in September, representing a year-over-year decline of 8 percent. Fast track to last year, sales totaled $1.28 billion during the same timeframe.
While NPD did not divulge specific hardware figures due to a recent shift in policy, NPD Group analyst Anita Frazier did note that all platforms took a measurable dive in September compared to last year, with the exception of Xbox 360. However, PSP and PS3 unit sales are up over last month, an uptick that could be attributed, in part, to PlayStation Move.
“Hardware unit sales, with the exception of the Xbox 360, are down versus last September, but a couple other platforms, specifically the PS3 and the PSP are up on an average sales per week basis as compared to last month (August 2010). Interestingly, the average retail price of hardware increased notably this month, driven primarily by the Xbox 360 Halo:Reach bundle and the PS3 Move bundle.”
