PSP Slim and Lite UMD Cache Results

by Mike Bendel on September 1, 2007 @ 6:02 pm

We know that a new UMD Cache feature has been added to the PSP Slim and Lite. What this does is take advantage of the extra RAM (now 64MB) and use it to speed up UMD game loading times. Sounds great in theory, but how well does it work?

GameSpot did some extensive testing with the feature and found that it does indeed shorten load times, but not as much as you’d hope. According to their report, WWE! SmackDown vs. RAW 2007 benefited the most from this new feature, cutting load times down by 37 seconds.

Other games, like Test Drive Unlimited, marginally benefited from the feature. In fact there was one case where the load time was longer on the Slim by a second.

End verdict? The PSP Slim and Lite will slightly speed up loading times, don’t expect drastic speed-ups here.

yet another let down.... Now you have to ask your self , is a tv out on a portable gaming system really worth it ?

the more that comes out about the PSP-2000 the less I am enthused about getting one. $ony is gonna bite the bullet with this one if they arnt careful.

As long as they figure out how to get homebrew working on it, it's fine.

Pros:

More memory - it might not help as a drive cache, but if it can be used by homebrew, you'll finally see larger games than would fit in PSP memory, like Quake 3 (and derivatives).

Video out - yes, it IS really a plus. When you're stuck at Granny's house over xmas, you'll be able to hook your PSP to the TV and watch something decent instead of reruns of Matlock.

Lighter - hey, with anything that is carried, lighter is better.

Buttons - perhaps the biggest plus out of all of them. Better buttons means better game play.

Cons:

No more IRDA - my biggest disappointment. The most used feature that went unused by Sony is now gone.

Same screen - people who don't like the current LCD won't like the new one either. I find it okay, but nothing special.

On the whole, the PSP slim is a decent replacement for the venerable fat PSP. It all comes down to - can we run homebrew on it? If so, on the whole it will be no big deal.

IRDA is the biggest let down.

i thought the screen was a new one? it's much slimmer, the post of PSP-2000 that x3 posted from a china site said that. maybe i'm wrong.

and my granny's up to date. she has a DVD player better than the one i have at home! XD
