Bungie Preps New Engine for Activision Project

by Mike Bendel on September 14, 2010 @ 4:56 pm

As Bungie bids farewell to the Halo franchise with today’s release of Halo: Reach, the company is already shifting focus over to its next project. You know, the one that entails a ten-year multiplatform partnership with publisher Activision.

Details on it have been virtually nonexistent, until now that is. Bungie has revealed that it is in the process of building an entirely new game engine from the ground up, not based on any preexisting or third-party tech.

Speaking to Develop, Bungie communications manager Brian Jarrard said the move to start fresh reinforces the studio’s “independent spirit.”

“Just like we don’t want to develop a game off someone else’s IP, we want to push our own technology in the same way. That’s going to be our position for the foreseeable future,” noted Jarred.

There’s no question that reinventing the wheel can be a costly – and risky – venture, but given that Bungie is a proven studio, we imagine Activision can rest easy at night.

Does anybody else cringe a little when they see Activision?

Yep.

Better question is does anyone NOT.

x3sphere says:

Yes, I would've rather seen them join ranks with EA. Nonetheless, Activision seems to be making strides to improve its image after the Infinity Ward fiasco.

I cringe when I here actvision, but I cringe more when i hear EA. Activision is gay but not all bad, but Ea has alraedy been ruined for years. In my opinion Bungie should just go solo.
