PS3 Firmware 3.42 Hits Network Update

by Mike Bendel on September 6, 2010 @ 8:31 pm

Update: We can confirm that all variants of the USB-hub emulating exploit (PSFreedom, PSGroove, PSJailbreak) are no longer functional in firmware 3.42.

We’ve just been informed that PS3 firmware 3.42 has hit Network Update. Although Sony usually updates its blog ahead of time with information on new firmware releases, that is not the case this time — presumably as today is a holiday in the states.

Judging by the incremental version bump, chances are this is a relatively small update. Chances are also high that it blocks the recently PS3 exploit that has been making waves across the net since the PS Jailbreak code was reversed earlier last week.

That said, we’d strongly urge that anyone who wishes to retain the ability to run homebrew should refrain from updating. Unfortunately, staying on 3.41 translates to no PSN access, as Sony has flagged 3.42 as a mandatory update.

And surprise surprise to anyone who has automatic downloads enabled and is sleeping..was starting to wonder if Sony would get around to this.

Still signed in to PSN playing a game and havent been signed out..guess when I'm done I'll check. I have automatic downloads disabled. Maybe they patched it anyway...

yolarrydabomb says:

another reason to unplug that network cable until you are positive that they cant update your system.

RJC4LIFE says:

Dont mind updating this one but just curious why I havent been signed out of the PSN because of the update. Still playing and still logged in though.

x3sphere says:

Usually when a new firmware update hits, PSN won't kick authenticated users right away as doing so would interrupt online games etc. That's why you are still connected.

Looks like Sony just updated their official blog, says the firmware includes "additional security features." No surprise there :p

RJC4LIFE says:

Huh..not playing anymore but still signed in and no update available..still on 3.41.

KezraPlanes says:

This time I'm going to hold on... Let's see if homebrew actually comes out of this

Muratcan says:

Would that feature of PSN+ actually update a user's PS3 though? Or just dl the update for it to get ready?

KezraPlanes says:

It's a PSN+ feature.

The DNS trick works for at least signing onto your PSN account without updating, but I do not know the limitations of this workaround (playing online games and such).

RoBz says:

Yup, using the DNS bypass again, playing MW2 online with no problems.

january39 says:

At the risk of sounding stupid, what and how to i enable a DNS workaround?

RJC4LIFE says:

I'm not using anything but an update is not available for me, still @3.41. I can play online, shop the store..any ideas??

BlackSheep says:

Fucking HATE PLUS!!! My ps3 got updated :(

RJC4LIFE says:

Were you sleeping? I had disabled that already so I avoided that.

BlackSheep says:

yes ;_; oh well i was planing to get a 2nd ps3 any ways

Dan says:

Just go to network settings, and enter the values 67.202.81.137 when you go through the 'custom' setup.

El Diablo says:

I can't believe that still works considering they blocked it from working the first time when they removed otherOS, are they really that stupid that they just don't include some type of block for it in all of their FW updates now?

Dan says:

Maybe they thought, "nah, there's no more exploits," and just abandoned the idea.

january39 says:

And this works for 3.41?

RJC4LIFE says:

For some strange reason I think Sony decided to not come down so hard on this as they could have. Almost like the update was to save face in regards to developers but I almost feel they wanted this to happen. Ok continue making games for the PS3..we fixed the hole, but thinking to themselves..ok keep working towards homebrew you guys so we can see the PS3 sales soar from it. I'm sure I'm wrong its just the way they (Sony) addressed it that is off putting.

Still no update available for my system btw, fully functional 3.41..

Dan says:

I don't see why not. Also I got the LGTool working again, so give that a try if all else fails.

RJC4LIFE says:

Funny thing is this is the system I wanted to update, my offline one is @3.41 as well. Going to leave it on for awhile see if it offers me an update..but really wondering if it will do a check if I power down and back up.If I come home tonight and still no update available for me I'll try that. Must be a PS+ thing though.

ultimakillz says:

i was playing off and on all day yesterday and was never prompted about an update. i just went home for lunch and booted up to watch some netflix and still no prompt. i plan on playing some red dead redemption tonight, so we will see....

InfinitiProject says:

Still logged in under 3.41 as of 7:45pm EST.

My PS3 was never turned off since last night so I wonder if staying logged in PSN would keep me online until I reboot...

RJC4LIFE says:

Still no update, lol, for my system available. Going to try a reboot..we'll see.

Switched over to my sub account instead of a reboot and update was required, used the DNS method and back online, not getting any errors so far...

InfinitiProject says:

Fortunately this isn't like 360 where it just boots you from Live and gives you an update prompt. Not yet at least.

I'm still online with 3.41 at this moment.
