Microsoft Reveals Transforming D-Pad Controller

[Update: As of writing this post, Major Nelson has confirmed the existence of the new controller and provided us with a video showing off the new controller and it's new functionality which can be seen above. The original post can be found after the break.]

Major Nelson just unveiled the new Xbox 360 controller to us with the all-new “transforming” d-pad. The controller will be made available on November 9th for $64.99, which also includes the Play & Charge Kit. Aside from the new “revolutionary” d-pad, the Xbox 360 controller will also feature slightly more concave analog sticks and grey action buttons. If you are in Europe however you will have to wait until early  next year (February) before you’ll be able to pick one of these bad boys up.

Sometime last night rumors were flying around that Microsoft is in the process of developing a new Xbox 360 controller with a new “transforming” directional pad. Come today and a Microsoft spokesperson has supposedly confirmed the rumor to StrategyInformer saying that “The Xbox 360 Wireless Controller with Play & Charge Kit – with Transforming D-pad will be available worldwide beginning early 2011″.

Ever since the first Xbox controller the d-pad has always been the one of the controller’s downfall, but come next year that is all set to change. While we do not yet know how this d-pad will compare to the current, the rumors have claimed that it will be able to rotate 90 degrees and raise up from its housing; something that fighting game fans will greatly appreciate.

This could very well be related to the patent filed earlier this year by Microsoft for a new controller, although only time will tell. We’ll hopefully hear more this weekend at PAX or later this fall at one of the other various gaming conventions being held.

so....i don't exactly understand, it's still a d-pad, what does transforming it into a circle do?, make it an analog stick, it seems stupid, d-pad's always been fine how it is imo.

Riorio99 says:

I think it jsut generally improves the sucky d-pad, which really does suck. Still, they probably should have just bundled this with the new machine.

Seth says:

From Joystic

Glad I held off on buying one from newegg for 30 bucks, kinda wish there was USB one since that what im using right now

ultimakillz says:

that looks like something that will break (or at least become jammed) easily, then we won't have d-pads at all! :argh:

Sousanator says:

Seems more likely to turn unintentionally (resulting in a no press), then break.

Also the greyed buttons may confuse xbox 360 newbies without the colours. At least I know it took me awhile to remember which colour button was where (for Quick Time Events) and that was using a controller with the colours.

Spiros says:

Yeah, I don't see what advantage having grey buttons would give me. Seems more like a con, imo.

Craig Fairfax says:

I kinda like new buttons. I never cared about the colour of buttons anyway.

And I fucking hated the old D-pad, So I'm glad they changed it.

x3sphere says:

It's a step in the right direction. What boggles my mind is, why didn't these ship with the new slimline unit?

El Diablo says:

I lol'd at how he had to bring up the new button colors as if they were some improvement and selling point or something. Really all they do will confuse people and make things more difficult, kind of stupid imo.

FrozenIpaq says:

Yeah I'm a little confused by this as well. The timing is also pretty bad, coming right out along with Kinect; the two of which are far from affordable. I just bought a new glossy black one from Dell the other day when they had them for $19.99. I'm definitely not liking the grey buttons though

Robby says:

I like how the buttons are not colored no more, made my controller look like a kids toy imo

Grey buttons is defintely a selling point for me, and my friends liked it as well.

The whole controller in general looks better then the plain white one I have now so I will get this fo sho.

It's a matter of personal preference.

Zero says:

Clever, props to their design team which figured out not everyone has the same preference, apart from the hybrid they have currently.

Simple things like this make the experience all the more enjoyable.

Don't think the button colours are that much of a problem, by now I would gauge most people have the positions memorized and only stood to confuse Playstation converters. Although, they should have just gone the whole way and coloured all the face buttons the same instead of these differently-toned versions.

Craig Fairfax says:

This. And anybody that has owned 360 (or the original xbox for that matter) knows should know the button layout by now; as for everyone else, the buttons have letters on them for a reason.

Bran says:

I bet the D-Pad is still mushy shit. I liked the original L xBox controller.
