Activision: Call of Duty Studios Attract More Talent, Black Ops Momentum On Track To Surpass MW2

by Mike Bendel on August 5, 2010 @ 8:21 pm

A string of hasty departures consisting primarily of longtime vets at Call of Duty studio Infinity Ward left company parent Activision with jobs to fill. Has the ongoing legal blunder turned talent away? Not at all.

Over an unspecified timeframe, Activision Blizzard COO Thomas Tippl revealed in a conference call today that over 5,000 applicants have applied in hopes of landing a job at IW and Sledgehammer, two of the company’s Call of Duty-centric studios, the latter of which is working on a 2011 installment that strays away from familiar territory — that being the FPS genre.

We have received approximately 5k applications for positions at our Sledgehammer and Infinity Ward studios alone. Out of that incredible pool, we’ve chosen 60 extremely talented individuals to join our team. These additions have been important and we are very pleased with the game development we’ve seen from both studios today.

Further, Tippl noted he expects the company to vest even more resources into its Call of Duty staple of studios into next year, following the release of Black Ops in November. With momentum on-track to surpass the massive sales of Modern Warfare 2, Activision expects Black Ops to register as this year’s biggest calendar blockbuster.

I don't see black ops being as successful as modern warfare 2 was when it came out.

Really I haven't heard about any hype for this game, none of my friends talk about it, no sites I go to talk about it.

El Diablo says:

I'm confused...if Activision is one company and Infinity Ward is another, how does Activision fire the people in charge then hire whoever they want? Do they own Infinity Ward or something? I don't know all that much about IW and their relationship with Acitivision other than that they make games for them.

x3sphere says:

yep, IW is owned by Activision, they are a subsidiary studio.

KurianOfBorg says:

I hope they DON'T have dedicated servers. The lobby system works 100x better than the dedicated servers in MW, at least in places where there are like 1 or 2 servers. I was really pissed with the few servers there are having crappy mods.

And I hope they even release the damn thing so there are people to play with instead of having to play at suitable Singapore time.

Craig Fairfax says:

I don't see it doing better then MW2. MW2 wasn't as well received as it was expected to be. Sure it sold incredibly well, but after a while many people jumped onto the Bad Company 2 bandwagon. And the $15 map packs were a turn off as well.

So on top of the people that always hated the series, and the people that don't like Treyarch, there are now a bunch of new Bad Company 2 fans that claim they are done with COD.

It'll sell well, but not MW2 well.

The only reason I'm even a little interested is because it's not based on WW2.

KurianOfBorg says:

I'm always alternating between BC2 and MW2 every 2 weeks. Both of them feel fresh and provide an awesome experience each time. I did think WaW sucked though, poor production values and crappy graphics. There was no way I'd buy WaW to play the multiplayer; just played MW till MW2 was out.

x3sphere says:

I agree on that. WaW still sold extremely well, though. It's hard to see Black Ops topping MW2 really but who knows, it might if Activision markets the hell out of it.

KezraPlanes says:

Pfft.

This is wishful thinking from Activision right there. Although Black Ops will sell well, it won't get anywhere near MW2 numbers. Many people were disappointed at how buggy MW2 MP was and swore never to repeat that mistake, although some will blindly buy Black Ops, most won't.

...ESPECIALLY if you have to pay for MP.

KurianOfBorg says:

What I can't stand the most is that they will get away with a profit even after charging for multiplayer. Bastards.

!Kernel Panic! says:

Treyarch community manager Josh Olin addressed the rumors saying Call of Duty: Black Ops will also be free to play online. "No, you will not have to 'Pay to Play' multiplayer either," he said. "Rumor -> Squashed."

http://fourzerotwo.com/post/833729222/modern-warfare-2-subscription-false

Activision issued a statement to IGN further reinforcing what Bowling and Olin had stated, saying the company has no plans to charge for online multiplayer.

"Reports of a subscription membership in Modern Warfare 2 are not true," a spokesperson said. " Activision has no plans to charge gamers to play Call of Duty multiplayer."

This news comes just days after industry analyst Michael Pachter preached that publishers such as Activision need to begin to monetize multiplayer by including subscription fees, starting with Call of Duty: Black Ops this November.

KezraPlanes says:

How many rumors are smashed before confirmed to be true? Most.

yolarrydabomb says:

Wait...what? :o

meh I rather have dedicated servers that works OFFLINE for LAN and lets you custom for better game play.
