Source Enhanced Alien Swarm Invades Steam Next Week

Originally released as an Unreal Tournament 2004 mod, a Source-enhanced flavor of the top-down extraterrestrial shoot ‘em up Alien Swarm will hit Steam as a free offering next week, Valve has announced.

While the remake was originally intended as a commercial release, Valve hired the team responsible two years ago. In between working on Left 4 Dead and Portal 2, they’ve been busy putting the finishing touches on Alien Swarm.

With a multitude of devastating weaponry at their disposal, players are tasked with eliminating an ominous alien threat as trained IAF marine agents. Up to four-man squads can engage in co-op play. The title will also leverage the entire Steamworks suite, featuring all the perks you’ve come to expect. That translates to matchmaking, Steam Cloud, and real-time Steam Stats. Additionally, 64 achievements are included.

All this for free? Yep, we were pleasantly surprised too. Valve can do no wrong. The alien apocalypse begins July 19.

I swear to god, I thought it said "Alien Storm"... Needless to say, I shit bricks. Oh what could've been.

But this looks interesting.

MenaceInc says:

Alien Storm was an awesome game. Wonder what a source-powered remake of it would be like :P

Joey says:

I already know, because there's only one answer... THE BEST THING EVER.

Serideth says:

I think this looks pretty awesome, Valve are getting better and better.

FrozenIpaq says:

The price of free is hard to turn down so I will definitely take a look at it next week

Nader says:

It's going live at 22 CET

Pokemanz master says:

Fun so far.

You also get a hat for tf2 if you play 2 co-op levels.

Ahadiel, Evilseph, and I just got off a few matches of this. It's a lot of fun, and I can see us spending time with it.

It seems like L4D in that you need friends to really have fun with it though. I can't imagine playing through it on hard or above with a bunch of randoms, especially since team play is important. Having people who don't know what they're doing would be bad as well since you need a Medic and a Technician who have some semblance of what to do.

Will be downloading this later. It's been a while since I last used Steam, which funnily enough was when portal was free.

I'm so cheap :(

Edit: Spoke to soon about Steam, I seem to have been hacked. Downloaded it and played the first level offline. Not usually my type of game, but very addictive nontheless.

UserUnknown says:

Sucks I'm gonna miss this. :( Dan: Sorry to hear. D:

ilyace says:

Why's that? It's free...

UserUnknown says:

Wont be at my comp to try it.

PR0fessor Burnt says:

its free forever....

UserUnknown says:

Oooh. I thought it was a one time thing. :l

Joey says:

Nope, it's fo'eva free. It's Valve's little way of reminding us that they're the most amazing developer ever, and that whole releasing L4D2 less than a year after the first one wasn't really "them".
