June NPD: Xbox 360 Sales Soar

by Mike Bendel on July 15, 2010 @ 3:29 pm

Microsoft’s sleek new Xbox 360 hardware revision topped the charts in June, retail tracking firm NPD revealed today. Trailing not far behind was Nintendo’s Wii, followed by the PS3, which shifted 304,800 units. On the whole, all hardware platforms saw a significant uptick in sales over the dismal month that was May.

Despite this, overall industry growth still took a 6 percent hit compared to last year, a result of floundering portable hardware sales. A notable dropoff in software sales across all formats contributed to the decline as well.

“Looking at historical seasonality for the industry, total year U.S. revenues (of new physical sales) could come in anywhere between $18 and $21 billion,” said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

“Given the strong slate of content still to come, and the release of the Move and Kinect controllers, which I believe will spark additional interest in gaming, I think we could see the total year new physical retail sales come in at $20B. We’ll also be reporting consumer reported sales of digitally distributed, rental and used games content to provide insight into those non-POS sources of game sales.”

Pretty huge difference, either a lot of people have both consoles and chose the superior version, or less people are buying PS3 games.

KezraPlanes says:

I guess the first, or a mixture of both...

MenaceInc says:

Surprised at the PSP holding above 100k units. :\

BlackSheep says:

Doesnt the ps3 have exclusive content?

# 2 sounds right

x3sphere says:

Multiplatform titles on 360 almost always outsell their PS3 counterpart. The 360 really tops the competition as far as software attach rates go.

FrozenIpaq says:

This is it. If you look at previous software releases that are multi-platform the Xbox 360 does the best. The PS3 is still gaining an increased install base, but their software attachment rate isn't as high. I know I will buy most titles for my Xbox 360 since it's my "primary" console why my PS3 acts as my media player

Abe Froeman says:

Besides this past month, when has either the 360 or PS3 outsold the Wii?

KezraPlanes says:

Never.

Sinfulfate says:

Not sure about the PS3 but the 360 outsell the Wii back in 07 when Halo 3 released.
