Square Enix: Xbox Live Network Policies A Holdup For Final Fantasy XIV 360

by Mike Bendel on July 12, 2010 @ 7:05 pm

In a perfect world, if RPG juggernaut Square Enix had its way, an Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIV would be in development. Unfortunately, the closed fort knox-like environment of Microsoft’s Xbox Live service is causing negotiations between the two firms to fall through, according to producer Hiromichi Tanaka.

In a recent interview with German site 4Player, Tanaka lamented over Microsoft’s sheer reluctance to allow external functionality, such as a web browser.

Despite numerous failed attempts at sweet talking, Square Enix remains hopeful. Tanaka says the company will make a continued push to reach an agreement, adding that there would “definitely” be a 360 version of the MMORPG if Microsoft comes to terms and loosens up its infrastructure policies. Keep the faith, folks.

I remember Pachter (yes I sometimes see his "program" on GT.com) talking about this Xbox Live thing...

If I remember correctly he said Microsoft would never allow something like a web browser because they'd be losing money.. Gotta look that up.

I'm getting fairly confused about the status of this. It was revealed last year as a PS3 and PC Exclusive, and yet SquEnix keep teasing a 360 version. They need to make up their minds.

hasn't ea managed to connect to their own servers?, actually i thought xbox live was simply a way to manage finding people, not forcing games to go through their servers, also i know many ea games u have the option to sign in with an ea account, same with bioware, and the "cerberus" network. so i don't understand why square enix would be having trouble

skparasite says:

I swear, Microsoft can be such a bitch. :/

Back when I played the hell outta Phantasy Star Universe (man I wonder if my level 70 is there..), the XBOX 360 version lagged behind terribly because everytime there was an update or expansion, Microsoft had to give the OK before the 360 servers could update. Which would take FOREVER sometimes.

Kinda off-topic (slightly) but this article reminded me of that (and the days I'd stay up until 5am on school days playing PSU. :P).

KezraPlanes says:

Because Square wants the game to have stuff the PSN has that Xbox Live lacks like a web browser (which is a must if you're playing an MMO).

slicer4ever says:

why is a web browser a must if your playing an mmo?(personally i've always found a web browser on a console to be fairly pointless, but that's just my opinion)

KezraPlanes says:

For Square it is. Their PlayOnline thingy they used for FF11 and will most likely use for FF14 needs direct access to the internet so you can see manuals and ect... Therefore the need for a browser..

slicer4ever says:

ah i see, so in other words their too lazy to build into their games the capability to view the necessary files.

KezraPlanes says:

exactly. xD

FrozenIpaq says:

Xbox Live is notorious for this sort of lockdown with games and content. If the game were to be hosted on MS servers than I wouldn't be surprised. Also any additional fee on top of Xbox Live is asking a lot for the consumers and really wouldn't see the appeal in it anyways.

CaptainHowdy72 says:

to hell with the 360 its not like its a real "console" its basically a pc. and there will be pc version. so "F" the crapbox. and besides it looks MUCH better on the PS3 as do ALL games. Take the last FF game, crapbox had to have it on MULTIPLE discs, and STILL had to downgrade the video. yeah thats a system i want. LOL
