Wii Party Shifts 66,000 Units On Day One In Japan

Nintendo’s spiritual successor to Mario Party — Wii Party — is off to a sound start in Japan. Retail tracking estimates courtesy of Famitsu, the editorial arm of Enterbrain, show that 66,000 units were shifted on launch day.

That total is divvied up between a Wii Remote bundle package and a software only offering, the latter of which took the lion’s share of sales at around 52,000 units.

At its E3 2010 press conference last month, Nintendo confirmed that the title is headed stateside later this year. Chances are it’ll have no problem winning over consumers, taking into account how well previous Mario Party efforts sold. Besides, any Wii prefixed title is guaranteed to sell by the millions, as even the decidedly vapid Wii Music has proved.

I like Mario Party games, especially for drinking games. I hope this one is as good as they were. I liked the Nintendo characters from the previous games and am worried that using Mii's is going to make the gameplay a little dry.
