Japanese Games Industry Lacks Motivation, Says Kojima

Metal Gear Solid producer Hideo Kojima feels the Japanese games industry is in a state of decline due to a lack of motivation. Kojima’s sentiments echo that of Capcom production head Keiji Inafune, who doled out harsh words at TGS last year, saying the Japanese industry “was finished.”

The West is very motivated. The younger generation of Japan is losing. The designers and to-be-designers in the West have the focus, ambition, and ability to make their dream become true. So it is not the Japanese technology or culture that is losing, we are lacking the motivation.

Kojima feels the only way to move forward is to work with individuals that not only have talent — but at the same time carry a realĀ genuineĀ passion for the industry.

“Creating abilities, at it’s core, is reliant on your love for the creation,” said Kojima in a Twitter tweet.
