NPD May: Red Dead Redemption Takes Software Crown

After waiting an extra month, sales tracking firm NPD sent along its video game hardware and software sales for the month of May. On the whole, sales took a 5 percent dip over last May, while year-to-date revenue rang in at $5.56 billion, compared to last year’s $6.16 billion — a 10 percent drop.

The hardware landscape did not change much from April. The portable sector took another hit, with PSP sales tumbling down to a mere 59,400 units, representing an all-time low for the platform in North America. At 383,700 units, Nintendo DS sales took a steep dive as well, yet still reigned as the top selling platform.

On the software side of the spectrum, Rockstar’s Western open-world epic Red Dead Redemption stormed the charts — shifting a combined total of more than 1.5 million units across PS3 and Xbox 360. Runner-up was Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy 2 at 536,900 units.

Interestingly, Microsoft’s 1600 point Xbox Live card topped the accessory charts for the third consecutive month. Sales of the entire video game points and subscriptions cards unit are up 12 percent on a year-to-date basis, according to NPD. See the complete breakdown of sales figures past the break.
