Crysis 2 to Have Low 3D Performance Impact

In an interview with VideoGamer, CEO and founder of Crytek, Cevat Yerli said that Crysis 2 will only be hit with a performance impact of 1.5% when 3D is enabled. That’s an amazing number, especially since Crysis 2 is already a demanding game. The current perceived method of producing 3D effects is to have the game render a frame twice which has a large performance impact on the game. However, Crytek has managed to create a method which only renders one image but creates a second image out of that one to produce the 3D effect.

This method will thus result in only a 1.5% performance loss which has enabled Crytek to bring Crysis 2 in 3D to all three systems, including the Xbox 360. You will only lose 0.4 frames out of 30 frames per second, so the loss is very minimal and probably not even noticeable to the naked eye. Of course, you’ll still need a really good PC rig or expensive TV set in order to take advantage of this new feature.

Greyone says:

If you're on pc you can still use 3D with anaglyph glasses. Not as amazing as with stereoscopic, but better than any movie I've see that used anaglyph.

FrozenIpaq says:

Greyone not all games support that though? The only recent game I know that supports that would be Batman Arkham Asylum. Crysis 2 will be using stereoscopic 3D.

Also something I would like to point out: Yerli said 3D isn't possible, well theoretically, on the Xbox 360. However I asked someone from the Xbox team while I was in LA about 3D on the Xbox 360 and they said it was all up to the developers if they wanted to include it as the Xbox 360 can and does support 3D.
