Capcom Hints At Next Resident Evil Game

Capcom is contemplating to back the launch of feature-film Resident Evil: Afterlife with a game tie-in, according to company CEO Haruhiro Tsujimoto.

In a recent interview with Japanese publication Nikkei, the exec noted the company’s intent to time the release of the film with another Resident Evil game installment.

The 3D movie Resident Evil IV Afterlife starring Milla Jovovich is scheduled to hit theaters on September 10. Timed with the movie’s release, we’d like to do something to heat up the game series.

It’s interesting, taking into account that Capcom has remained mum on the status of Resident Evil for PSP — a portable title that was formally announced at E3 2009.  While the announcement itself received much fanfare, nary a screenshot or footage of the title has cropped up since then. Has it been scrapped? Stuck in development hell? Hard to say. Whatever the case may be, if it’s still on for a release this year, we’ll undoubtedly see it next week.

Last year, ex-Capcom exec Chris Kramer lauded the title as “all-new” and “totally different.” That’s the last we heard of it.

Resident Evil: Afterlife makes its 3D debut in theaters on September 10.

Thanks, Andriasang.

...I don't know how well a game tie-in would do based off the movie Resident Evils. I don't think it'd be very Resident Evil to begin with.

I still play the early Resident Evils (pre RE4) to this day. I always find them fun, especially to speed run. Hell, they /still/ give me the chills (especially RE2 in the police station)! I've only played RE4 3 (once on GC, twice on Wii) times and RE5 once. They've definitely lost the charm after RE4.

Man talking about this makes me want to pull out my PSP and play them again. Well, there goes my evening!

I completely agree. RE5 in particular felt like a slower paced version of Gears of War. Looking back, I actually preferred the tank-style controls of previous RE installments. Sure they were annoying at times but did add to the tension.

Feels like Capcom is gradually losing sight of what popularized RE in the first place. Granted, RE5 still sold fairly well but it seems as if more and more people are growing tired of the direction Capcom is taking. Unless RE6 is a complete reinvention or returns to the franchise roots I can't see it doing too well.

I rememeber reading that RE6 would be a reboot of the series actually x3sphere, so maybe they'll do just what you said.

I enjoyed the story in RE5 (the Chris/Jill/Wesker thing, not the africa one) but I hated the gameplay. I'm tempted to get the DLCs but I don't have the money right now. All because I really want to play "Lost in Nightmares".

To be quite honest it seems Japanese devs are clueless this gen (except for Kojima).

Ontopic: Please don't do a movie tie-in, from what I saw of the trailer it'll suck bad. And a game of a bad movie can only be worse, can't it?

You mean a game based on a movie that was suppose to be based on a game.

I have to agree a game based on it would suck so much

I thought that as well, there was something about the control method that made it resi evil. Im playing re5 as we speak and i got to say it is not as satisfying - Where are the puzzles?

PR0fessor Burnt says:

there are a couple later on but not nearly as many as one would hope to see
