PSP Custom Firmware 3.52 M33 Update #2

by Mike Bendel on July 29, 2007 @ 2:48 am

Team M33 have released 3.52 M33-2, a feature update to their 3.52 custom firmware series. Noteworthy changes include compatibility with iR Shell’s usbhost and nethost features for playing PSone games, a built-in option to format flash1, and full support for both Chinese and Korean languages.

Additionally, the release is bundled with a plugin that supports previous versions of POPS (aka the PSone emulator) on 3.52 M33-2.

Please note you must be running 3.52 M33 to apply this update!

update works perfectly. Just one question, what is pops?

x3sphere says:

PSone emulator. With the plugin included in this release you can load previous versions of pops (specifically 3.40, 3.51, and 3.52). Useful because some games have issues with the 3.52 pops, but worked fine on 3.40.

Cheezeball99 says:

 Pops is one of the best reasons TO USE CUSTOM FIRMWARE! IMO, at least.:p

homn says:

Where does the seplugins folder go on this update?

Cheezeball99 says:

The root of the memstick, broseph.

homn says:

Would it be okay to delete the seplugins folder after the update?

x3sphere says:

Yea its not even needed for the installation... just if you want to use the plugin you can copy that folder over at any time.

Tenshigami says:

It'd be nice if M33 fixed it so I wouldn't have to turn my plugins off to run 3.51/3.52 homebrews. It's not too much of an issue, just annoying if I forget WHY my homebrew isn't working, and freak out. Is there any way to contact them about things like that? I'd leave a comment on a donation or something, but I need to wait till I pay my college tuition before I know how much I can afford to donate.

Acerthief says:

my chinese patch guide is useless now.... boo:(

shadowthor says:

i knew about the ps1 emulator i was wondering what exactly did the plugin do?

Cheezeball99 says:

It lets you pick which version from which firmware of the emulator you want to use, because some versions have some problems with some, others don't.

lynrossuk says:

sorry guys but iam a bit lost.

Coppied files over to psp, than ran update.

Now i can go into the recovery screen e.t.c but my psp does not goto psp screen?

TimTiger says:

Sounds like a semi-brick to me. use the recovery system from recovery mode. by placing a copy of the 1,50 firmware on your memory stick in X:/PSP/game/RECOVERY/ and make sure it's called EBOOT.PBP. then from recovery mode run the file. I hope that helps

lynrossuk says:

how do i get 1.5 firmware onto psp mem. card.

lynrossuk says:

TRIED THAT NO JOY.

TimTiger says:

in recovery mode you have the option to toggle USB, do so and place THIS FILE in that location. remember to rename it to EBOOT.PBP first.

lynrossuk says:

yeh sussed it but it din not work, any other ways.

TimTiger says:

Well I'm lost now, maybe someone else will know.

Acerthief says:

running the 3.52M33-2 update on a NON-3.52M33 can surely semi-brick your PSP.

you forgot something, TimTiger, you need some specific files included in the recovery folder as well to downgrade back to 1.5 on your PSP.

Follow THIS guide here, and be sure to format your ms card.

Sn00p.KiLLa says:

do u need to have the sony 3.52 update n the 1.50 update and den rename them to 352.PBP and 150.PBP? or do i just put the files on my psp and install?:confused1: im running 3.52M33

fearlex says:

First of all, hi to all my name is ...... my nickname is fearlex, hope to make friends here and i'm glad that my friend recommend me this forum. Glad to be here.

Ok now to the facts, i have 2.52 M33, and EVERYTIME that i try start a game on my Memory Stick, it goes into a balck screen, it won't shudown, then i have to remove the battery(that's the only way to leave the black screen) and i lose all my PSP configuration. Then i have to get into recovery mode and disable all in the advanced configuration tab and then, it just turn on, but without my last configuration, this didn't happen when i had 3.40. Is this a know problem, or it is just me, 'cause my PSP is brand new and it was working like a charm before installing 3.52.

I appreciate all the help that you can give,

Thanks :D

Cheezeball99 says:

First off, thanks for educating yourself on the subject matter at hand, and going through all of the posts (which I can tell you did by disabling the advanced config options) and doing the normal stuff. :thumbup1: As for the problem, that is quite odd. I would suggest downgrading and reflashing 3.52M33, maybe? Have you flashed any custom XMB themes, or had them flashed when you upgraded from 3.40OE? It almost sounds like it's trying to refer to the PSP splash screen when you try to start a game, and it can't find it, because it's been modified or removed from the flash, and freezes. I would suggest downgrading and reflashing, and if that doesn't help then come back here, and we'll help you as much as we can!

You can find our downgrading OE/M33 FW FAQ HERE.

fearlex says:

Thanks for your words and glad to be here as i said before.

About the problem, i installed yesterday the latest update, and format the flash1 and i reset the PSP using the new option on the recovery menu. THE ONLY PROBLEM now is that when i put a wallpaper, and i load a game, when i'm done playing and i go back to the main screen, my wallpaper is gone. I haven't install any themes or anything, the only customization is a wallpaper. thanks again for any help and now i'm hook up to this forums.

Thanks

Cheezeball99 says:

So you fixed the problem from yesterday? Cool beanz, good to hear!

Heh, yet again, an odd problem indeed. Now, you're letting the wallpaper save, right? When it asks whether you want to save the wallpaper when you set it, you answered yes, right? Another thing, maybe it's an odd problem or something with M33's new format flash option. Also, glad to hear you'll be around the forums, everyone's very welcome here!:thumbup1:

x3sphere says:

Have you tried running the restore default settings option?

desibawaji says:

Hi,

I was playing valhalla knights up till 3.51 M33-6 and when I upgraded to this release which is 3.52 M33 UPD#2 it just gives me a blank screen and stops working. Any help will be highly appriciarted.

Thanks

Darkchild says:

did you reset the settings? (There's an option in the recovery menu you can use to delete the settings) that should make it work, either that or try activating sony's NO UMD :)

PSP_user says:

PSP_user says:

Hi i got another Problem now =( i got the Upgrade but when i load a ISO games From Memory card it load the Actually UMD and when i pull out the UMD the game doesnt load what can i do to fix this Help plz

Acerthief says:

disable everything in the recovery menu, both in configuration, Advanced -> Advanced Configuration, and CPU at default.

make sure you didn't press the UMD icon but memory stick -> then the ISO games.

try this first, and see what results we have :D

BTW, next time you wanot to add something, don't post again straight after youself.(This is known double post) If you want to say something, press the EDIT button on the bottom right and add it what you want to say. Cheers XD.

PSP_user says:

Thank you man Games work 100% Perfectly now i really Appriciate your help just one more thing id like to know is will this have an effect on anything else on the PSP and can i UPdate the PSP when a new Firmware comes like is everything normal

Once Again Thank you =)

Acerthief says:

well you might feel the game lagging if you are using cso under default CPU speed. you can change to the one you want now.

you can use the "hide corrupted icons" as well cause that doesn't really effect the PSP, it's just hiding some files.

Basically nothing is effected. :D

don_010 says:

one more thing can this custom firmware mess up

Acerthief says:

well now there's pandora battery, there's a way to save your messed up PSP.

and no this firmware doesn't mess up, it's the most up to date cfw now, but on update #4.

**Please don't double post next time. Thanks!

ki2120 says:

hi guys!.. I'm new here.. just wanted to ask how to install the 3.52 M33 update on the psp. I've downloaded the archive file and extracted the seplugins and copied it to the root directory of my memory stick. so... what's next?

x3sphere says:

Actually you just need to copy the "PSP" folder to the memory stick root then run the update through the PSP Game menu.

ki2120 says:

Ok.. thanks for the help. I'll try doing it now. be back later if i have more questions.. again thanks for the help.

ki2120 says:

ei guys, got the upgrade working fine but i'm encountering the same problem as fearlex.. when i put a wallpaper, save it and use it. then load a game, when i'm done playing, go back to the main screen, my wallpaper is gone. same thing when i turn it off with the wallpaper , when i turn it on the wallpaper is gone. hope you could help... Thanks

Acerthief says:

hm.... try updating to update 4 and see.

HERE's the update link. give it a shot first :)

RJC4LIFE says:

And you can go back to the base 352 M33..or to 4 or 2 or 3..

ki2120 says:

where could i get the update?.. and what's new with the update4?.. thanks again.

x3sphere says:

Acer already linked you to it:

http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3185

It doesn't fix anything related to your problem but you should update anyway.

As for the problem you're experiencing, have you tried running restore default settings?

ki2120 says:

just finished updating my psp, but still the same problem with the wallpaper. games work perfectly though. anyway already tried restoring to default settings a few times.. oh well, maybe i just have to bear with this until a solution comes up. i love this forum its very useful.

Acerthief says:

have you tried formatting your flash1?

sound not cool but maybe it can solve your problem. then make all the nessesary files with "Space for everything v1.9".

EDIT: HERE is the link. In the program go to Extra -> Fix BSoD -> Fix the BSoD by restoring the flash1 backup.

You don't need a backup, as the main purpose of doing this is to make all the folders needed in flash1.

The loss of doing this you'll lose some of the PSP settings.

ki2120 says:

is this application trustworthy?.. i hope it wont do any damage to my psp... lol.

ki2120 says:

how do you put the space for everything on the psp? i've already downloaded it from the link?

Acerthief says:

it's an amatuer programmer's work. so you decide if it's trustworthy

basically i don't use it myself, i just do it manually by hand, but it's a complicated step so i wouldn't recommend for most users.

as for the folder placing.... put the "Space for everything" folder into ms0:/PSP/GAME150.

Dont care about the BOOT folder, you don't need it.

I'm not responsible if it bricked though. i just tried the procedure myself and it's okay though.

Your call. :)

x3sphere says:

You know that 3.52 M33 already has a format flash1 option in the recovery menu?

Just hold R during bootup then go to Advanced -> format flash1

Acerthief says:

just what i mean. format flash1 under the recovery menu and add nesssary folders with the app. :D

ki2120 says:

already tried formatting the flash1, same thing. nothing happened..

Acerthief says:

there IS a chance of a bad flash, maybe a few files to handle themes are bit corrupted.

any chance of re-flashing your cfw? not really recommended, but in the end it might be the only solution.

Eizervalknir says:

Hmm... I've might have a similar problem to ki2120.

So basically, I've got 3.52 M33-4. I later downloaded a theme (http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=513767) and installed it. Works fine. Later, I notice that the font interfered with some of my games (font size too big), so I decided to replace the changed "font" folder with the one from a Flash0 backup. However, it said that there wasn't enough space to do so, which was strange. This is probably the source of the problem.

Later, booting up again, I encounter a BSOD. Pressing Circle to restore settings and whatnot doesn't work (or works, but resets almost immediately). After resetting twice, iR shell boots up. I can still do things in iR shell, however.

I've tried formatting Flash1 already. Didn't work. Any suggestions?

(Also, I've noticed that there's a guide to installing Custom XMB's without flashing. Should've done that instead. :glare: )

Acerthief says:

Well the fonts interfearing cannot be done.

You must realize the NAND of the old PSP is very small, be sure to check the "Space Left" on the computer everytime you are going to flash something. So it's not strange at all.

Now in your situation, I'd prefer re-flashing your Firmware, because i believe that your flash0:/FONT is too messed up your psp can't fix it with the BSoD.

Follow THIS guide first to go back to 1.5,

Then follow HERE to install 3.52M33, and last update to 3.52M33-4.

x3sphere says:

Makes sense, I'm guessing the other guy did something similar.

When you first load the wallpaper image, it tries to flash it but also loads the image in RAM. So that's why it shows up initially, but not after playing a game or shutting off the PSP. It's probably not flashing the image because there is not enough space left.

Like Acer said it is best to reflash. Although there no need to go back to 1.5, just run the full 3.52 M33 installer again.

ki2120 says:

you guys are great, after doing all that stuff i've finally fixed the problem with my psp. thanks a lot!!!

nicolojaime says:

Hi I have a problem similar to fearlex. My PSP CFW is 3.52 M33-4. I encountered an error saying "game could not be started..." then I read this forum and learned that I have to disabled some of the configs under the recovery menu, both in configuration, Advanced -> Advanced Configuration. I did it and was able to play the games saved in my MS but after using a wallpaper saved in my MS, the settings I just configured returned to it's previous configuration resulting to the same error I encountered before. Looks like using a wallpaper reverts the setting. Well the solution as of now is not to use a wallpaper at all :( any advice? thanks!

PSP_user says:

hi i got another problem can some1 help :( when i get some games and put them on the PSP it comes up with an error Transferring the games file is corrupt or something and when its going ti freezes and closes it i have 3.52M33 Phat PSP thanks =)

x3sphere says:

@nicolojaime: are you sure your flash1 is properly set up? First connect a USB cable, enter Recovery mode, then go to Advance and toggle flash1 USB. Make sure you have a "vsh" folder there. Inside the vsh folder should be a "theme" folder.

@PSP_user: sounds like a bad USB cable... that wouldn't be caused by the firmware.

PSP_user says:

Hi i got a Problem Again :( i want to Upgrade to 3.71M33 but it wont let me i have 3.52M33-4 and when i click on the Icon it Update from Game on the PSP it says: Requires 3.52M33-3 or higher to update

Some1 help me plz :(

x3sphere says:

You need to enter Recovery mode by holding R during bootup and in Configuration, switch the GAME folder kernel homebrew setting to 3.52.

EeveeXIII says:

Thanks x3sphere for the help

everything works fine

one last question...

can i delete all the update files and all that stuff relavent to it on my memory stick? or would that mess me up in some way?

x3sphere says:

Yes, you can.

soda13 says:

er, i have a problem. i am currently running on 3.52 m33 without any updates yet. i did what you guys said about disabling confugurations and all and it works fine. thing is, whenever i set a wallpaper, the settings in the recovery menu revert back to default.so now i have to go to the recovery menu and disable settig=ngs just to play iso's again. when the xmb loads up, the wallpapers gone. so i set it again, settings go back to default AGAIN, it's an endless loop. please help me fix this, thanks in advance guys!

x3sphere says:

Did you try formatting flash1 via the recovery menu?

soda13 says:

crap.. sorry if i'm wasting your time but i'm such a noob at this.. how do i do that..? thanks man..

x3sphere says:

Hold R during bootup. Your PSP should boot to a black menu screen, then go to Advanced and there should be an option to format1 there.

soda13 says:

all i'm getting is 1. advanced configuration 2. toggle usb (flash0) and 3. toggle usb (flash1). when i click on the toggle usb (flash1) the folders dic, gps, net, registry, vsh and a file config.se pop up onto my computer screen.. should i delete all these files?

thanks for entertaining my questions...

x3sphere says:

There should be an option that reads "Format flash1 and reset settings." I definitely remember it being in 3.52 M33, although maybe it was added to the M33-4 update.

Try updating to M33-4 if you haven't already:

http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3185

soda13 says:

thanks man, you're the best! i'll get back to you after i update

soda13 says:

sorry for double posting..

i updated to 3.52 m33-4, so i formatted the flash1 like u told me, and i set my wallpaper, then i tried loading an iso, and it worked! the only thing is, when i exit the game and return to the xmb, wallpaper's gone..

x3sphere says:

Odd, well in recovery mode connect a USB cord to the PSP and go to "Toggle flash1 USB"

Go inside of vsh, and make sure you have a wallpaper folder there. If not, create it.

Apart from that you might want to try shutting off your PSP after setting a wallpaper and then turning it back on and see if the wallpaper stays.

soda13 says:

woah yeah, i tried setting a wallpaper and shutting it down, when i rebooted it wasn't thre anymore. haha.. i tried making the vsh and it worked, dude you're the best! i have one more noob question if you don't mind.. what are the advantages of 3.71 m33-3 over 3.52 m33-4, if there are any, and personally, which do you prefer? thanks a lot. i just got started in modding my psp last night so i'm still learning.

x3sphere says:

Personally I prefer 3.71 M33. But it is not for everyone. Homebrew is not as compatible with 3.71 M33, unless you install the 1.5 kernel patch. Plus some people have odd issues with 3.71 M33 that result in bricking.

So... being that you're new to the PSP scene, I would recommend staying on 3.52 M33-4 for now, until you get more familiar with custom firmware. In the end there are really no advantages of running 3.71 M33, aside from the fact its running 3.71 kernel as opposed to 3.52.

frosty5689 says:

There are some advantages to 3.71. The vsh menu is more user friendly and handy. Extra options like using .ptf theme. More psone support and alot of cool plugins are made for 3.71 m33 now.

soda13 says:

thanks a lot!! i'll do as u say and stay on 3.52 m33-4 for now

now i'm trying out emu's for my psp. i tried snes9xTYL 0.4, and it works, but it makes the gameplay so slow.. any way to fix this..? thanks!

robyiscool says:

hi to all, i'm new here and i'm a psp noob. i wanna ask why some of the games are not running on ma psp. i have succeccfully running tekken:dr, worms 1 and 2, exit, fifa street, all iso's and cso's, but games like nfs:most wanted and brian lara pressure play just refuse to play, these games start but they got stuck in their loading menus, i tried downloading from different links but no progress. i'm on 3.52 m33.

Acerthief says:

Delete the file and buy the UMD. You'll never have the problem.

gnash says:

ok i did my beat to read all the post (cheez) and maybe i did not read enough or i could be slow. I installed the 3.52 m33 today and it works like a charm, tried to run an NES emulator and it would not load. I think i need to install the -2 update but it appears it only corrects PSONE emulators and not others?

Am i over/under reading or is the -2 update where i need to be, also would there then be recovry screen adjustments i need to make, do not recall seeing the advanced tab but hae changed the UMD option in config did not see a change there, also on a different note i have a .cso of a game that shows up on my memstick but sits on load forever, will 3.52 m33 not support cso, i heard you can play iso but obviously a cso is a diff file type, any input would be appreciated. (been running 1.50 forever and like the remote play option on 3.52 want to keep it but also keep my homebrew/emulators)

Thanks again

x3sphere says:

You should update to 3.52 M33-4:

http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3185

Also when you are on 3.52 M33-4 go into recovery mode and change the ISO mode to Sony NP9660. This should fix your problems with CSOs.

gnash says:

ok got the -4 update and all went well with the install, my cso still seems to get stuck at load (maybe its bad, at work and can't try another) But still cannot get my two emulators to work, both come back with the game cannot be started error (code 8002014c) did i not do something right the the -4 update? - did change to the np9660 like you said must be missing something else..

x3sphere says:

Try making a GAME150 folder alongside GAME and move the emulator folders in there.

gnash says:

ok got the emulators to work, assuming my cso either is not supported or is corrupt since i got an iso to play with no problems. Now next and probably last question i am going to have for awhile is when trying to do remote play option to my ps3 it says the psp requires a system update. Now it looks like there is a 3.71 m33 release also do i need that instead of the 3.52 and will i then loose my emu and iso capabilities? if anyone knows please pass along the info cause as it stands remote play to my ps3 is the only thing i am missing, i can play my nes emulators my iso games and regular umd games if i can remote play ps3 then i will be as close to heaven as a non cgi mortal can be

Is the UMD mode set to M33 or np9660.

Your certain you have 3.52M33 and not just 3.52 OFW.

Check kernel is set to 3.52

D/l update #4 and try that, i am sure the need to go 1,2,3 in order is not required.

and finally,
