NPD Study Finds “Extreme Gamers” Spend 48 Hours Per Week Playing Games
by May 27, 2010 @ 8:27 pm

Individuals that fall within what market research group NPD calls the “Extreme Gamers” segment spend 48.5 hours a week, on average, playing video games — according to a recent study. This group represents a small, yet still significant 4 percent of the gaming population in the U.S. That’s nearly four times as much as the national average, which as of 2010 sits at 13 hours a week for gamers 2 and up.
Backed by a sample base of 18,872, the study recorded an uptick in digital distribution sales and reach. 17 percent of gaming purchases were made digitally, up 1 percent from last year’s results. Interestingly but not surprisingly, PC gamers made 30 percent of their most recent purchases in the last three months digitally.
These “Extreme Gamers” give a new meaning to the word hardcore. 48.5 hours a week? Sheesh. That’s some real dedication. We salute you, whoever you are.
