Pachter: PSP2 Needs Sub $200 Price Point Or Else

by Mike Bendel on May 21, 2010 @ 10:03 pm

Always outspoken Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter has chimed in on what he feels is a suitable price point for Sony’s next generation handheld. While Patcher is reserving final judgment until the device is announced, he reckons that the PSP2, regardless of its eventual feature set or capabilities, must be priced at $199 or less in order to have a “real shot” at winning over consumers.

Take it away, Pat-man:

No thoughts on PSP2 until I see the price. I think that the PSPgo is a fine device, but the price point has absolutely killed it. If Sony takes it and makes it more expensive with multiple cameras, I think that they will destroy the brand. The only way I can see a PSP resurgence is to price it below the iPod Touch, which is a versatile device with a really great display. The PSP2 has to be priced at $199 or lower to have a real shot. If it has a Cell processor, that price point isn’t likely.

What’s your take? Would you consider investing in the PSP2 if Sony decides to forgo Patcher’s advice and stick with a price premium of $250 — or even $300?

I know that Sony sells the hardware at a price even cheaper than its production cost. They make profit from the software sales and services and maybe from the hw after some changes that lower production fees so I don't think PSP2 will be that expensive.

249,- release day price tag.... that's my bet.

MenaceInc says:

This sounds like a reasonable estimate. Far from the original Game Boy's release price of $89.99 though
