First revealed on the cover page of a Spanish magazine, Warner Bros. today officially confirmed the existence of F.E.A.R. 3. Yes, that’s F.E.A.R. 3, not F.3.A.R. as the above logo depicts. Suffice to say, a proper title makes us a little more hopeful. Day 1 Studios is helming the third installment, responsible for the console ports of F.E.A.R.

That leaves series mainstay Monolith Productions out of the picture for this one, which is a bit of a downer. Then again, the shift could bring a breath of fresh air to the horror-themed shooter.

While the press release sent out shied away from details, it did drop word of a new gameplay mechanic called “divergent co-op.” Vaguely detailed, this mode promises to give players “distinctly different abilities affecting their own play as well as the experience of their co-op partner.”

Additionally, Warner revealed that horror director John Carpenter and Steve Niles, the man responsible for penning 30 Days of Night, are lending their talent to F.E.A.R. 3. Working in tandem to enhance the overall scare and shock factor, Niles has taken up script-writing duties while Carpenter is crafting the in-game cinematic sequences.

F.E.A.R. 3 is slated for a fall release on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.
