Xbox 360 Gets USB Mass Storage Support April 6

Drop those speculation caps, folks. The ability to use USB flash drives for “storing profiles, game saves, demos and more” on will hit the Xbox 360 on April 6 through a system update, Microsoft’s Major Nelson confirmed today.
While any USB-based flash memory over 1GB size will work, only up to 16GB of space can actually be used, as previously rumored. However, two USB devices can be connected to a console simultaneously, allowing for a grand total of 32GB in storage split across two partitions.
Additionally, the Major notes that while USB hard drives “may” work, he recommends taking the flash based route for speed and convenience purposes. At any rate, it’s hard to imagine why anyone would use a hard drive, being stuck with only 16GB usable space per device.
Microsoft is partnering with SanDisk and plans to offer an official Xbox 360 flash drive in May. Apart from the special branding, these drives are already configured and formatted out of the box. Aside from that little perk, there’s no advantage to picking one up over a plain jane drive.
