PS3 Firmware 3.20 To Add 3D Support?

by Mike Bendel on February 11, 2010 @ 11:22 am

It’s no secret that Sony intends to bring PS3 at the forefront of the 3D craze, with upcoming titles like Super Stardust HD 3D already confirmed to take advantage of the tech. Screenshots of the 3.20 debug firmware have surfaced, depicting a clearly visible “3D video output” configuration parameter.

While features from debug firmware don’t always follow their retail equivalent, you could consider this a special case. Being in the TV business and all, it’s no surprise that Sony has been quite enthusiastic over 3D tech, voicing its intent to add support for it with a simple firmware update during CES last January. Marketing director John Koller was quoted as saying, “It’s gonna take just a simple firmware update which most people do regularly anyway, and that’s all it’s gonna take to accolade the PS3 to 3D gaming.”

Of course, there will be prerequisites, a 3D capable HDTV as well as a pair of shutter glasses. Koller also noted that 3D Blu-ray titles will require a separate firmware update, which means the current implementation right now is likely for games only.
