Confirmed: Full PSP CPU Speed Unlocked

by Mike Bendel on June 22, 2007 @ 2:30 pm

Sony has confirmed to Shacknews that developers now have access to the PSP’s full CPU speed – 333 MHz. Previously, developers were only able to run games at a maximum speed of 222 MHz (Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters running at 266 MHz is a myth, guys).

Sources tell me that the unlocking of the PSP’s full CPU speed does not affect previously released titles at this time. It is simply a feature developers now have access to with the firmware 3.5 SDK libraries.

so i guess cpu speed control will be removed from dax's custom firmwares?

x3sphere says:

nah definitely not. This just means that developers now have the option to use 333 MHz, doesn't mean they will, and previously released titles as well as the XMB still run at 222 MHz with firmware 3.5.

I don't know how many things this will help. I'm just wondering if this could potentially hurt the custom firmware community. Since some games don't run well off memstick unless at a higher cpu speed.(ratchet and clank) Then what can we expect to run into if someone makes a games for 333 speed will that cause loading speed and lag if off the memstick. If I'm totally wrong then good but if I'm onto something then rough seas are ahead.

x3sphere says:

Ratchet and Clank has some odd problem with OE. When you run it using DevHook, it has no problems running at normal speed (222).

Anyway I don't really see the problem, except for those who have fake memory sticks. All games I've ran at default speed off the memory stick run fine. 333 is just smoother.

Cheezeball99 says:

Likewise, I ran all my games at 222 forever, I just changed my UMD speed to 300 like 2 weeks ago, not that I was having problems at all, it's just all smoother now, like SOCOM. Love that game.
