MAG Beta Expands To Pre-Orders

Sony is intensifying the stress test for Zipper Interactive’s 256-man online shooter MAG, announcing an incentive for its loyal customers. Those who have already reserved the title at any participating GameStop or EB Games for the Canucks out there are guaranteed a voucher code to join in on the fun. If that’s you — time check your email stat.

Additionally, for those applicable, Sony has given out times and dates for beta meetups online, which can be viewed after the break. As the servers are not running 24/7, these meetups are your only chance to play until November 9, from which point those who have pre-ordered can enjoy unlimited beta access.

Monday – Friday:

1:00 PM – 4:00 PM EDT
8:00 PM – 12:00 AM EDT

12:00 PM – 3:00 PM CDT
7:00 PM – 11:00 PM CDT

11:00 AM – 2:00 PM MDT
6:00 PM – 10:00 PM MDT

256 players online, at once, all in one game.

Interesting concept, but I can already predict how much of a pain in the A.. it's going to be.

Powerhouse multiplayer games are still attempting to optimize online gameplay with more players with better connection at the lowest ping possible:

> Gears of War still has an incredibly crappy Host->Player online system that's yet to be perfected.

> Call of Duty franchise is just now finally integrating Host migration.

> Halo seems to do an excellent job with games containing only a dozen players, but it only takes a bad egg with horrible connection to make games incredibly laggy.

But 256 players...!? It seems almost unreal. I'm hoping this really plays out as expected, it would defintely be a good step in the right direction of online gameplay.
