Carmack Talks Acqusition, Feels id Has A Real Purpose At ZeniMax

Programming extraordinaire and Doom creator John Carmack has spoken out on Bethesda parent ZeniMax’s acquisition of id Software, calling the move a “perfect hand and glove fit.”
Although siding with larger publishers such as EA or Activision was an alternative being considered, Carmack felt id had a real purpose at ZeniMax and figured going with them would bring the best of both worlds. In essence, id would retain its independence, have more resources to work with, and not overlap but rather complement operations at Bethesda.
With a publisher like Activision, which already has the Call of Duty franchise behind its belt, there was the fear of stepping on each others toes in terms of production and marketing, possibly leading to internal conflict.
They’re the two giants of the industry. But we knew that we would have to go through big corporate changes if we went with them. We know the developers at the studios owned by those companies. And while they have good things to say, there is no doubt about it that things would change at a company of that scale.
If we had gone to one of those companies, we would be one more studio. We would be a prized studio. But we wouldn’t even be their only shooter studio. We would be competing for resources with our brother and sister studios. There is no question if they have Call of Duty project, there would be some degree of conflict there.
If id is pleased, so are we. Bring on Rage and Doom 4.
