Capcom Not Completely Abandoning UMD Yet

The announcement of PSP title Fate/unlimited codes as a digital-only effort left questions, leaving us out to wonder if Capcom is considering to leave the UMD format behind and release solely on PSN in the foreseeable future. With talk of other titles like Patapon 2 taking the no-disc route, as well as rumors that point to a UMD-less PSP, it’s not such a outlandish thought. So, is Capcom abandoning the format?

The answer is: no. In an attempt to quell such notions, Capcom said today that it has no immediate plans to refrain from backing UMD.

We certainly do not intend to stop supporting UMD. Certainly for us PSP is very important – more so with Monster Hunter coming – than maybe any other publisher.

Fair enough. In Capcom’s case, it is easy to see why they are hesitant on making the jump. With millions of gamers over in Japan snapping up each Monster Hunter title, I suppose it’s safe to say they want to ensure that all PSP owners can play it, whether they have an internet connection or not.

You know, I just realized something. Now that UMD has been abandoned, does this mean that there's "almost" limitless possibility as to how much content you can fit into a game?

january39 says:

Well, in size i spse you are right, but unless you had some serious processor upgrade's games would simply get longer rather than better in quality.

Still, when has a longer game been a bad thing - GOW being longer is one title that could benefit from a longer game time.

x3sphere says:

That's a good question. I would think it is almost limitless in regards to the space a non-UMD can take up, although Sony probably has limitations in place to prevent developers from going overboard. I doubt they want a title taking up 4GB when most people have 1 or 2GB Memory Sticks.

PR0fessor Burnt says:

ya i only got a 1 gb memory stick

these games better be damn cheap or its going to suck to pay like 30 bucks then go spend another 30 for a memory stick

january39 says:

I got a 8gb one, cost a bit but memory is costing less by the day.

Justdie says:

ya i got a 2GB mem stick and hop that the developers are not going aver board for none-UMDs cause it would suck if a game was great but took up over 2GB of space.
