By way of an announcement from an SCEE community manager, Sony has confirmed that it will close its Go!Messenger service on March 31. Introduced in firmware 3.90 and launched last year in partnership with UK-based telco BT, Go!Messenger allowed users to communicate with friends and family over video-chat, voice-chat and IM protocols.

Sony said the decision was made simply because not enough PSP owners used the service. To quote, “Although [Go!Messenger] proved a popular concept, achieving a significant number of registrations, it didn’t gain the number of regular users that BT and SCEE were aiming for.”

One would assume the removal of Go!Messenger would require Sony to issue a new firmware update, so we can likely expect one on or before the 31st.

well no shit. only european countries got it. thats probably why. this update will probably be useless to american owners.

Go Messenger is no good either way, without the ability to concurrently run it while playing a game or surfing the web kinda fails at first hurdle.

Question is whether Skype will go the same way.....?

jx233 says:

Well, to remove this, that means a firmware update should be released like x3sphere said. I'm counting on a version 5.06 or 5.10 being released soon.

angelsniper45 says:

hopefully 5.06. Theres no reason to jump all the way to 5.10 yet, since the latest theyve come out with is 5.03, and this only a minor update.

Skype probably will be slashed to, but im sure there will be homebrew apps that will be made to port these over to future firmwares without it

well always ebuddy ,heysan and pspwebbrowser

jx233 says:

Well, Version 5.06 should have more features than just removing Go!Messenger.

angelsniper45 says:

well we are talking about sony here. who the hell knows whats going through the programmers minds when they make these updates

jx233 says:

This is what might happen.

Acerthief says:

If sony can have features where people can chat while playing games will be a huge hit.

And like you say it is because they don't, it kinda makes GO!messenger redundant.

When my PSP is turned off, it is usually charging not left turned on simply for GoMessenger.

I bet next update simply removes Gomessenger, even though SCE pledged not to release minor updates (although to SCE axing gomessenger is probably anything but minor) they still do.
